Omnibus Stupid MFers in the news thread (Part 1)

Pfft.

I am sure I learned about ordinance and ordnance a loooong time ago in a much older Dope thread.

Learning that without getting hurt is cool.

I wish I learned that flammable and inflammable meant the same thing that way.

I have also learned from personal experience that “genius” and “ingenious” both mean “you’re an idiot’ when said in a sarcastic tone.

That’s why you always use the qualifier “stable” in conjunction with “genius”. No mistaking it then.

I can’t find a free link just now, but people are upset that Splash Mountain is getting a remake to fit in with The Princess And The Frog and away from Song of the South.

Honestly this kind of annoys me too. All of the classic attractions having to be “updated” all the time. A few that I remember:

Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse → Tarzan Tree House
20000 Leagues under the sea → Nemo’s journey (or whatever)
The old autobahn → something “Cars” related
Bear Country → Winnie the Pooh
(probably more that I can’t think of right now)

I guess it’s the thought of getting old and seeing my childhood fading away piece by piece. :man_shrugging:

Are all of the attractions associated with one of the company’s properties? I don’t remember that was always the case. For example, the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean and It’s a Small World attractions were original.

If nostalgia for your childhood depends on a deeply racist film that Disney wishes would simply disappear without a trace, perhaps the annoyance is worth the effort

No opinion on the film because (as far as I know) I have never seen it. I only commented on the pattern of Disney feeling the need to change everything. I don’t remember anything racist depicted in Splash Mountain, either. Wasn’t it just the animals they showed there?

ETA: I’ve never seen Princess and the Frog, either. I have no feelings about the value (or lack thereof) of either film.

The original design was to incorporate scenes from Song Of The South.

The film itself is not racist. The framing device is a bit problematical, but the original Uncle Remus stories are traditional African-American folk stories that I wish someone would bring back. The thought of these stories disappearing is heartbreaking.

That’s a very fine lined distinction to make, and one several wouldn’t make.

There’s enough people who have made that claim in the press at release and in the subsequent re-release that it’s not something one can simply declare unilaterally without significant public challenge. At a minimum, changing the branding on a ride based on the film shouldn’t be nearly as controversial.

If the stories are the important part, there are better ways to preserve them.

I’d always assumed it was referencing Treasure Island (1950), on which Walt Disney was the (uncredited) Executive Producer.

Is anyone here old enough to remember the live Indian show at Disneyland?

I’m old enough to remember the original Disneyland shooting galleries, which used, IIRC, .22CB caps and had to be repainted every night.

Would that be the one seen here, starting at around the 10:10 mark?

I didn’t watch the video, but the Indian Village was outside, not in the Golden Horseshoe Saloon. [I’ll watch it when I’m back home.]

That may be where the Indian Village was, but this live Indian show apparently took place inside the Saloon…although it could be a one-time deal filmed for this special, seeing that it featured Annette Funicello and Ed Wynn.

I look forward to watching the video. And now that I’ve had to google, the village lasted longer than I thought. One website says it wasn’t replaced until 1972.
