Omnibus Stupid MFers in the news thread (Part 1)

Need answer fast?

That reminds me so much of how the Pebble Beach Co. tries to stop people from even taking a photo of the famous Lone Cypress.

I was at a museum last weekend and found out that a font can not be trademarked, but the name can. They said one of the fonts in Microsoft Word is identical to a pre-existing font, but they just changed the name. I can’t remember what the names are, though.

There’s a street on Beacon Hill in Boston (the old-money part of the city) that’s particularly photogenic. I think they try to prevent professional photographers from shooting there, but still plenty of tourists.

In the traditional SD… well, tradition, this requires a nit-pick.

I assume that you refer to the fonts Helvetica and Arial.

Granted, they are superficially similar, but anyone with similar or above expertise in typography to myself - and I am basing my “expertise” on nothing more than being married to a graphic designer - they are actually fairly different and it appears that Arial was not really influenced by Helvetica.

(As you can imagine, evenings down at the bar with my circle of friends involves a lot of discussion about kerning, letter spacing, line height and similar typographical concepts both online and physical. We are super fun.)

Fonts matter!

Great piece. I love that the final frame is the word papyrus in Comic Sans, the most derided font ever. (Papyrus is a distant second.)

And today, in Florida Man news, a guy sucker-punches a 63-year-old disabled man umpiring a high school baseball game for giving FM’s son an unsportsmanlike conduct warning during the game. Truly, the nut does not fall far from the tree.

I heard it from someone at the Museum of Printing. I figured they should know what they’re talking about, but maybe he was just repeating a known, but incorrect conventional wisdom.

I recently redid my résumé in Doves Press.

It has it’s uses.

Sadly, they do share the same defect, which makes me hate them both with the hot hate of <insert your metaphor here>. I have iffy eyesight, which means that the sixes and nines with that tail that curls back around can be difficult to distinguish from eights and sometimes zeros. It is absolutely infuriating when a spreadsheet insists upon defaulting to these fucked-up fonts, when reading numbers is particularly important. Why force me to expend extra effort to read the numbers when a Gothic or Optima is so much easier to read?

I’ve always been partial to the Geneva font myself.

(I grew up using Macs.)

Palatino or die!

You Dopers are truly a collective font of knowledge.

[I went from Phoenix, Arizona, learned to type in Tahoma …]

The school should take a cue from South Jersey:

They, they have to be better than Angel Hernandez!

“… so then I punched myself in the face.”

This one really pinged my “WTF” meter.

But no question, that is one stupid person, even if it wasn’t his M he was F’ing

That is one case that could involve measurement of every item involved and analyzing if bottom half sexual force can channel through packing crates and a pile of clothes hard enough to fit the definition of abuse. Definitely fits the definition of stupid, though.

A confounding factor is that a fresh corpse wouldn’t be as damaged as one that has…aged.

Febreeze has material for a new commercial.
