Yeah, that explanation just reeks of “after-the-fact rationalization of original stupid mistake”. What really happened IMHO was that the editor heard “controversy about US politician being Indian”, thought of American Indians (probably with a dim recollection of the Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” kerfuffle from several years ago), and went with the feather-headdress caricature.
