“Like a reprimand, a censure does not remove a member from their office so they retain their title, stature, and power to vote. There are also no legal consequences that come with a reprimand or censure.”
The Washington representative flipped a red district and always campaigned as a moderate. She supports abortion rights and sensible gun reform. If you were to primary her with someone farther left you’re just handing Republicans another House seat.
This seems petty considering a censure like this doesn’t generally mean anything.
When people talk about Democrats engaging in a circular firing squad, this is the kind of bullshit they mean.
Post shame? Hell, I’d be bursting with pride to be censured by the current House. Anyone who voted for it would be doing me a huge favor. You can judge man by his enemies.
The consequences of not holding Democrats accountable for their inaction are plain to see before us right now - a party that doesn’t respect its electorate, can’t get anything done when it does have power, and is utterly ineffectual as an opposition party wheb it isn’t.
If we want to win elections we need to do to the Democratic caucus what Republican voters did to theirs in 2010.
Get rid of the milquetoast centrists and moderates who are more worried about norms and seniority than the future of this country, and force the ones who survive a primary challenge to start listening to their constituents instead of Goldman Sachs.
Remember the Republican congressman who yelled “Liar!” during Obama’s SotU address? I can’t condemn that and not condemn a Democrat doing the same thing. Even when I agree with everything the Dem yells.
MTG and Boebert were screaming at Biden like howler monkeys throughout his 2023 SOTU speech and were never censured for it. Why should the standards be different for Democrats?
I can, because a rule that’s only followed by one side isn’t a rule, it’s a handicap, and I’m sick of Democrats playing with one hand tied behind their back and then telling their voters that they’re powerless to do anything besides ask them for more donations.
This is nonsense and your purity tests are not helpful to anyone but the Republicans.
The censure was a statement that outbursts during an address from the President aren’t acceptable. Yes, it’s hypocritical, highly hypocritical, because as pointed out MTG was much worse and it was mostly ignored. I don’t disagree.
But the idea that someone who agrees with a censure is no different than someone who will kill a bill on a particular issue? And based on that alone, you think they need to be primaried? This is MAGA-level insanity. For fucks’ sake.
