Omnibus Stupid MFers in the news thread (Part 2)

So that infection’s cleared up?

.

And yes, Waukesha seems pretty average for having all the insanity we’ve been reading about.

It is the “White Flight” county, full of people like my parents who specifically moved one suburb west of Milwaukee County so their tax dollars weren’t “paying to help poor people”.

But I do sometimes ask “Is Waukesha the Florida of Wisconsin?”

(Hmm, it is full of one-way streets… it’s frustrating. You’ll see the building you’re driving to, but can’t there even after ten minutes of meandering. Is that enough for some people to snap?)

Vegeite and family are definitely a niche culinary affection. Mad respect for your yeast spread knowledge and dedication to Unami goodness.

I will have to get me some Cenovis to try.

A like for such products grows on you.

My wife went to college there. She described life there as “Waukeshitty”.

I have to comment!

I can’t tell if “TooLowBrow” is serious or joking. Irony is dead.

Has to be joking. Everybody knows about ‘sacred cows’.

If the last ten years have taught me anything, it’s that the list of things “everybody knows” is much shorter than I once thought.

I thought everyone knew that list was short.

Of course we already do sell some beef to India. As much as they want in fact. So the idea that the Indians will suddenly rise up and create a groundswell of fresh demand for US beef on a scale to supplant China is ludicrous on its face as a matter of pure economics.

To say nothing of the cultural point that India is heavy in vegetarians so per capita beef consumption is small.

I suspect this was satire, but who knows.

Not even sure if the wiki article is satire.

Apparently India is the worlds third largest exporter of beef. Or fifth maybe. Or its not permitted.

Holy cow!

It’s not; it is heavily-cited and wasn’t written as a joke. But the subject is a controversial one, as noted on the article’s talk page.

What isn’t permitted is the export of the meat of cattle, but beef from water buffalo (removed from bones) is still allowed, and that is where these large export claims came from.

The article really needs work though. A number of these citations use broken links so they are difficult to verify. It can often take forever to get a consensus on an article like this, which makes editing difficult. I’ve tried to serve as mediator on similar articles and oof.

Yeah I realize it isn’t actually satire and sections have been edited without a global edit to to clean it up.

The thing it does demonstrate is this is a complex issue. India is not a monolithic culture and the reality is our North American sacred cow take is likely pretty myopic. A little smug humor at the expense of a real or satirical maga poster should be taken with a grain of salt.

Also … Its interesting.

Exactly. While exports are governed by national law (as you’d expect), the slaughtering and consumption is not, and is handled state-by-state.

A user of a code-editor package called Cursor noticed that they were suddenly being logged out when switching between devices. The user contacted customer service via email, and was told that this was a new policy that restricted subscribers to one device per account and they’d need multiple subscriptions if they wanted to use multiple devices. As a result, scores of users cancelled their subscriptions in protest of corporate greed.

It subsequently turned out that Cursor has no such policy and the customer service rep was an AI that made up the policy out of whole cloth, and the logout was caused by a bug that has since been corrected.

Shit!

Ya know, the entire AI industry really really needs to get their programs under control so they stop making shit up. If you are going to an AI for answers, you kinda hope that your answers are correct and factual.

I don’t blame the AI industry for this. They know there’s a problem, and they’re trying to correct it, it’s just that, with the current form of AI, it’s very difficult to make a change that you want to make, because nobody understands how anything affects anything at all.

The real blame goes to all of the other companies who are racing headlong to be the first to inject AI into everything they do, without paying attention to whether AI’s capabilities are actually a good match for their needs.

It doesn’t sound like AI is safe to use for any purpose that requires factual accuracy.

I admire any company that has the sense and courage to wait to use it until it is reliable, if there are any.

“DocChat, do I need to tie off the artery when I remove the spleen?”
“No. there is minimal blood flow through the spleen.”
