Another article I read said they’d filmed themselves fake sitting in the chair previously, indicating they knew it was a museum piece and they shouldn’t touch.
So having watched the news video:
They knew it was an exhibit and was not to be sat on, they were miming almost sitting on it so they could take pictures, and the guy lost his balance and plopped onto it.
And calling it the “Van Gogh” chair seems to be marketing. It’s by a contemporary artist who sells other stuff on his website in the $5000 to $20000 range Nicola Bolla - Artworks for Sale & More | Artsy . He named it the Van Gogh chair for reasons. Since we’re in the Pit, it feels like something a very new museum (5 years old) bought to fill up space. So lets not act like he broke the penis off Donatello’s statue of David (which you can also walk right up to).
Sure, these particular visitors should have known better, but it’s still sloppy on the part of the museum, because not all visitors are people who should know better. There are also children who visit museums, for instance, and a child might not as easily grasp the distinction between exhibits and actual seats, and might also not be able to read a sign.
Even in this case, I think that these particular idiots might have been dissuaded from miming sitting by a velvet rope or ribbon or the like.

On thinking about this some more… Artwork that looks like a chair, but which collapses instantly the moment a normal-sized person sits on it, from a current artist, sold for a price fairly low by museum standards, in a completely unprotected exhibit, with a color security camera in portrait mode focused on the chair even though landscape mode would give a better view of the rest of the room and the other exhibits, and the video is released to the news.
Does anyone else smell something, here?
