Fox Business host isn’t sure if the V in “Chapter V” is “five” or “vee”.
How old is he? That seems like one of those “I’ve never heard it said out loud” type things.
More likely a case of the “here, you’re now doing the (business/science/art) reports, who cares how familiar you are with it” thing you often see in news media. Now, old-school actual journalists would look up something unfamiliar found in the copy. But these talking heads often see it for the first time ever on the teleprompter.
Sure, not a good look for those who take things seriously. But it’s FOX so its line is “all you common folk out there, chill, this is something only nerds care about, all you need to know is things are good when R’s in charge, same things are bad when D is.”
But that’s the opposite!
A woman in the UK named Carol with a history of schizophrenia checked herself into the hospital, believing that she was having an episode because she thought someone was trying to communicate with her through her fridge.
It turned out to be an ad for Pluribus, a TV show about a woman named Carol, being displayed on her smart fridge’s LED screen.
(Note: Samsung and the ad maker are the stupid MFers here, not Carol.)
I suspect the story is bullshit. Note that the only source for it is a post on Reddit. As that link mentions the UK Advertising Standards Authority is the relevant regulatory agency and if this really happened, the sister should file a complaint with them (along with Ofcom?).
There’s an accident on a local highway right now.
Nothing special about it, but notice the dump truck in the upper left corner. Unless the driver is making a point, it seems odd to use an American flag as a cover. Looking online, I see they appear to be fairly common, or at least not uncommon.
Eh, any effort to actually treat the flag with respect went out the window on Sep 12 2001. The only important thing became displaying it as ostentatiously as possible.
Yeah, those load coverings that look like American flags are relatively common around here. Lotsa redneck truck drivers, doncha know.
How is drawing a flag on a truck (or anything else) disrespectful?
It’s not necessarily. But using a flag as a tarp to secure a dump-truck full of trash is quite disrespectful.
Well, this is a case of draping it over a pile of dirt…
…whereas, back in the Scouts, we learned to retire a flag if it touched the ground. And we learned a long list of “required” ways of displaying the flag.
And things to never do, like wearing as clothing (or a scarf or a doo-rag or a Speedo!).
Our leaders (all WW2 vets) pointed out that wearing a flag is something “hippies” do, as disrespect for the flag… and the country for which it stands.
Hah! I didn’t even see the flag on the tarp - I was focusing on the one drawn on the tailgate. That’s a bit more of an issue, although of course there’s no way of knowing what’s under it. It could be trash or scrap, it could be sand or gravel. Construction materials are nothing to be ashamed of.
Personally, I think all those flag rules you guys have are hopelessly archaic, and you all know it. Nobody in the U.S.. left or right, really cares about “respecting the flag” in accordance with the letter of the law, except as an opportunity to attack their political rivals.
The adoration for and deification of the US flag is silly anyway, it reminds me of how Catholics treat relics (true or not). So covering up a garbage truck with one is a refreshing and welcomed comment on current US politics. ![]()
I wouldn’t say this is true.
But, unfortunately, many of the folks who do care about showing respect to the flag are also the sort to just assume they know what such respect entails.
Basically, the same situation they have with the Bible, or the Constitution, or any other document they hold important/sacred - they don’t actually bother reading it while simultaneously telling all and sundry exactly what they believe is in it. The vast majority are also too intellectually incurious (and let’s face it - stupid) to address this fundamental issue.
It’s still a dump truck.
For me at least, it’s not about the rules or even about my feelings towards it, it’s that the people that are doing things like that are also the ones who claim to be the most patriotic.
It’s like when [someone who’s name I can’t remember], was wearing an American Flag but was doing it, explicitly, to piss of the left. I don’t think many people on the left cared beyond the hypocrisy of it. IIRC, when she posted herself wearing it, she made some type of comment specifically to get people worked up.
Apparently Pete Hegseth had an American Flag as the liner for a suit jacket and it’s making it a PITA to figure out who I’m thinking of.
There’s an old episode of Barney Miller where Wojo arrested a guy who was selling various flag-based products, towels, T-shirts, hats, which are all violations of the US Flag code (still). The guy had a flag on the seat of his pants, and Wojo wouldn’t let him sit down. When Barney told him to release the guy because the Supreme Court had said the flag code was unenforceable, Wojo was very upset. When he found the guy was a fellow Marine, he was even more so.
Tomi Lahren…that’s who I was thinking of. I forgot about her. And here’s what I was talking about. Pretending to be super patriotic while using the flag (or something that looked like the flag), specifically, to piss people off.
What’s wrong with dump trucks? Maybe I’m channeling my inner 5-year-old here, but I happen to think heavy construction equipment is cool.
