Omnibus Stupid MFers in the news thread (Part 2)

The only acceptable outcome is Count Binface’s run away victory.

I support Piers Morgan no longer emitting anything.

What movie?

Apparently, it’s Hyperspace (1984), starring Chris Eliot, which I am ashamed to admit I have never heard of.

Also known in certain markets as “Gremloids” for some reason.

The villain in that movie is named Lord Buckethead. Binface has previously run for office under that name, but a different perennial candidate now stands as Lord Buckethead and he created the Binface character as a similar but original costume.

If the major British parties refuse to run anyone against Idjit Farage, his margin of victory will serve as great propaganda fodder for his cause.

Even if the vote tally ends up 97 to 3 in a seat with 10,000 eligible voters, the 97% of votes cast victory will be spun as a huge endorsement of Farage himself and his party and his ideology.

The UK is not as post-truth as the USA. Yet. Still best to not hand the enemy a large and gaily wrapped valuable gift

Even in Farange’s own district, there have to be a lot of people who don’t like him and who would vote for Binface as a protest vote, and there also have to be a lot of trolls who would do it for the lulz. In fact, I’d guess that, ordinarily, trolls are a significant part of Farange’s supporters, but put head-to-head against a pro, he’ll lose some of them.

As noted in the article, Parliamentary convention prohibits Members from speaking while wearing a hat, which might cause an issue if Count Binface were to somehow actually get elected. Does a trashcan-shaped helmet count as a hat?

Do MPs even need to speak? And if it’s a “convention”, rather than a law, well, I think that Binface might be inclined to flout conventions, just a hunch.

Meanwhile, can anyone explain how Farange’s stunt is supposed to accomplish anything?

Let’s just add a bunch of extra floors to this 50 year old building. What could go wrong?

A Manhattan high-rise remained unstable Tuesday after officials found that columns buckled and floors sagged while it was being converted to luxury apartments, forcing evacuations in and around the Midtown construction site.

Gensler, the architectural firm leading the project, says on its website that it is transforming a pair of 1970s-era office buildings by adding more than a dozen stories and redesigning an adjoining tower.

Buildings department records show the project has been fined by the city for several safety violations, including glass and metal falling off the building, along with an incident where a worker fell off a ladder.

Fire officials said two columns appear to have buckled and there were multiple cracks and sagging floors between the 21st and 26th floors. From the street below, a badly bent column could be seen through a large glass window. The fire department also posted images of the column.

I was watching a live feed and saw someone in a Spiderman costume come by and talk to police. I assume they told him no, you can’t climb the building; at any rate, they shook hands all around and he disappeared.

Apparently, it temporarily halts the current Parliamentary investigation into his failing to disclose a £5 million contribution he received before taking office and he says he’s doing it to “stick two fingers up at the entire establishment”.

He sounds like he’d be great at parties.

Usually, Spiderman swings away, I’ve never seen him disappear.

You never see anyone disappearing. That’s the point.

Chris is the son of legendary comedian Bob Elliott. Bob was one half of “Bob and Ray”, a long-time comedy duo of radio and television going back to the 40s.

Chris got his start as a production assistant on Late Night with David Letterman, and in fact was part of the show when it first started. He started appearing in bits on the show and also became a comedy writer, and was a big part of the show for most of its first decade, both behind and in front of the camera.

He left the show in the 90s to star in his own sitcom, Get a Life, which is where I first knew him. He played an adult who never grew up; lived with his parents, delivered newspapers as his job, and so on. (His real life dad played his show dad.) The show was okay, I was never a big fan. He also starred in a film he made with Tim Burton called Cabin Boy, which featured David Letterman in a brief cameo role (a guy selling sock monkeys). The movie was a flop, and IMHO it wasn’t very good.

He then had roles in a couple of very successful films (not as the lead though); Groundhog Day (one of my favorite films ever) and There’s Something About Mary. He also joined the case of Saturday Night Live for a season, but he wasn’t very good and didn’t like his time there at all. He later had minor roles in the shows Everybody Loves Raymond and How I Met Your Mother, and then was a main cast member in Schitt’s Creek as the town mayor.

Elliott is often cast as an unlikeable guy in just about everything he does, and he excels in the role. Unfortunately, that has always (in my mind) made him sort of unlikeable as an actor, even though intellectually I know that such a role can be important and if I dislike him in it, it’s probably because he’s doing a good job. But I can’t really help it.

I think @Alessan was saying he’d never heard of the movie Hyperspace, not Chris Eliot.

Oh. Yeah, I never heard of it either.

Already has its own MPSIMS thread (minus the Spiderman element):

I often wonder if that’s part of the problem with the world today. When the UK’s National Oceanography Centre started a poll on what to name their new research vessel, a few wags thought “oh, what a laugh it would be to vote for Boaty McBoatface.” Except it wasn’t just a few, it was enough to win. When the majority of people are trolling, it’s not trolling anymore; they actually win. I think that’s part of Trump’s success; he has the “everything’s broken and who I vote for doesn’t matter” vote all to himself. Farage may have that bloc, as well.

Take a look, overhead!

Like a streak of light!
