From the other establishing shots in the news station video it looks to me like the highway they were on had a surfaced median/left shoulder that did NOT continue onto the overpass bridge but just ended at the edge of the void with no barrier to redirect you you back onto the roadway nor even to just smash into. Which would be an added omission from the highway agency.
And damn, youngest girl was 14.
I wonder how much input they all had about even getting into the car. A 14 and a 16 year old girl were in the car with 18 and 19 year old men. The girls may not have been dragged in there, but unless they were, say, sisters of the young men it seems kind of hinky to me.
