Calloway, a big name in golf clubs, puts out an ad in association with an outfit called Good Good Golf that advertising geniuses thought would be hip and edgy, but turned out to be dumb and cringeworthy.
Calloway has issued a boilerplate statement about how it regrets the ad which doesn’t reflect their values. The mention of diversity and inclusion in the apology has predictably triggered a withering blast from sub-morons on Twitter (their favorite apoplectic insult directed at Calloway is “gay”).
You really have to wonder about the thought processes of the relevant folks at both the ad agency and at Calloway. I think we’re way past the time when “any publicity is good publicity”.
Nowadays avoiding awakening the baying horde on social media is more the main consideration. And in an era with two baying hordes, each of which has polar opposite sensibilities, that can be a tall order.
Do not court controversy; it has a way of showing up uninvited enough already.
It’s also golf, which few people think should be ‘exciting’ or ‘edgy’.

Well, I can’t see the ad in question. It sounds stupid but I’m not sure I’d make the leap to domestic violence.
I have values and shit, but I’ve grown weary of recreational outrage. These days it has to be really something to get me upset.
This may be an indictment of our times.
I’m not cutting him any slack, he is a horrible person and he should not be in any leadership position in the Democratic party. He is dragging the party down and harming my rights because of it.

As to “edgy”, the entire golf industry has a serious problem. All the recreational players are dying of old age. Their demographics say in 15-20 years most courses will have no players.
They have to somehow make golf look desirable to 20-somethings. And do it soon. Without pissing off the 50- to 70-somethings who are their current bread and butter.
As with our discussion about the attempted rebranding at the dying Cracker Barrel restaurant chain a year ago. You can’t get new customers without change, and you’ll piss off existing customers with any change. What’s a Mother to do?
I’m not sure if that’s true or not. From what I can see it seems that golf is still exceedingly popular amongst all demographics. My guess is that it would be undergoing a true explosion these days rather than just keeping steady or growing slightly if land weren’t so expensive. The complaint I hear more often is that it’s difficult to find a tee time in extant courses and they are expensive.
Which isn’t to say that the demographic of golf isn’t a diverse one that you are bound to offend by anything non-anodyne.
I have seen the ad in question, and it seriously squicked me out. He shoves her to the ground from behind (blindsides her), then, hovers over and says the bit about not touching his driver in a very threatening manner with ominous music playing on the soundtrack. Nothing lighthearted or no-big-deal about it to me.

It was obviously a bad idea. Like showing any kind of violence in your golf advertisement is really a bad idea. Showing violence against women is an even worse idea.
Do you have a cite for this? I’m a golf junkie (playing, watching, reading), and I’ve seen no such catastrophic prediction.
I think they thought it was worth a try because it only needed a budget of 13 cents and was scripted and filmed by a couple of middle-schoolers.
(Only the first 15 seconds of that was the “commercial” in question. And I didn’t realize the Reddit video would autoplay.)

Apparently these people run a Youtube channel, so for the right audience these aren’t random people and it might make more sense.
No matter what the context, that look on the woman’s face after she’s assaulted tells the story for me. Completely, 100% unacceptable.
It was supposed to parody a recent horror movie that apparently isn’t as well known as they thought.
I thought that it would at least be funny if you suspended your outrage and took it as silly satire, but watching the video there was nothing in there that seemed to even be trying to be funny.
It was worse than offensive, it was stupid.
