Despite the similarity, meteorologists don’t study meteors.
The “weather” meaning of that root actually came first. Before it was known that there were rocks out in space, meteors were generally assumed to be… some sort of weather phenomenon (with handwavy details).
They weren’t kidding when they predicted heavy showers.
