Oooh, another time suck webcomic!
Thanks for that!
[Nitpick: Poison, not venom.]
Despite never having handled the species before, the Brazilian and his buddy gutted the fish, removed its liver and then boiled and ate it with lemon juice.
It was a meal to die for.
That’s when the doctor gives you the pamphlet “So you’re going to die”.
It’s not stated in the article if the victim knew about the dangers of preparing pufferfish, so maybe he wasn’t a stupid MF but only died tragically out of ignorance.
It does say that he removed the liver, so that suggests (to me) he knew about the toxins.
This struck me:
An unnamed friend had reportedly given Magno, 46, the deadly seafood as a gift…
‘Gift’ in German means ‘poison’… which looks like the French ‘poisson’, which means ‘fish’.
I’ve never prepared whole fresh fish, but don’t you remove all entrails of every fish before cooking it? And as I understand it, fugu chefs have a special strict method of removing the liver, almost ritualistically, that no layperson knows.
Ha, that’s a funny observation.
It describes preparation here and it says that the toxin is found everywhere other than the flesh. But then it says you can boil the head, which seems to contradict that. But it sounds like he didn’t remove the skin, so I don’t think he had a clue what he was doing.
The poison in pufferfish comes from what it eats. There are now farm raised pufferfish that are non-toxic.
Technically, I believe it comes from bacteria that contain tetrodotoxin that the pufferfish then concentrates into it’s liver and skin.
Technically, I believe that I would never eat pufferfish, even if a “friend” gave it to me.
Especially if I wasn’t positive that the friend hadn’t taken out a life insurance policy on me…
I feel the same way about Taco Bell.
Well, where’s the fun in that?
If you gut the burritos properly, you’re fine.
In the article: While Japan reportedly sees around 50 poisoning incidents per year, the majority occur when amateurs try and take a stab at it
Phrasing.
Aw, you know that was deliberate!
Techbro takes to Kickstarter to sell an AI-powered clock that occasionally lies about what time it is, thereby rendering it useless for its only purpose.
