I feel remorse because my criminal actions have negative consequences for me is not a good look.
I’m torn about this. Raping a 12 year old is a terrible crime, but almost everybody deserves rehabilitation, he was a young man when he committed the crime and has done his time. But yes, it’s not a good outlook that a convicted child rapist represents his country in the biggest sports event of the world.
An interesting Reddit thread related to their views on prison and rehabilitation.:
And given the ages of some of the participants, I’m wondering if he’ll be violating any restrictions placed on him as part of the sentence.
Of course that needs consideration, but I’m quite sure (at least I hope so) that the Dutch Olympic committee or volleyball association that nominated him for the Games has cleared these matters before.
Surely we’ve never before seen the Olympics mixed with the sexual abuse of children.
Reference to Larry Nasser to save others the need to follow a blind link.
There have been enough Olympics sexual abuse scandals that I wasn’t sure which one was being referenced, but then, there have been enough Olympics sexual abuse scandals that it didn’t matter which one was being referenced.
But generally once people find out about the abuse, the abusers aren’t invited back anymore.
Though it does appear that this rapist is aware that his raping a 12 year old girl may very well be a topic of conversation while he represents his country on a global stage.
Not that I expect the rah-rah feelgood broadcasts to say a single thing about it, much less repeat it over and over like they probably should.
In Nassar’s case, he was first reported to the authorities in 1997, but nobody actually did anything until 2015. That was almost two full decades that he was abusing athletes before anyone did anything about it. He was ultimately charged with sexually assaulting at least 265 athletes. Note, that is only what he was charged with, who knows how many victims there already were.
USA Gymnastics (which represents gymnasts in the US in international competitions) failed, the US Olympic Committee didn’t do anything either, and even the FBI didn’t take allegations seriously. My point is that this isn’t the first time something as serious as child rape was brushed under the rug because winning medals for a country was considered more important.
Another reason I decidedly am ignoring the Olympics this year and hence.forth.
We’ll let the IOC know.
(shrug) It’s hardly the only scandal they’ve ignored over the years. I find the committee members and reps living it up big on the backs of what amounts to slave labor disturbing as well. I have better things to do with my time.
Alaska has no shortage of stupid people; not on a par with, say, Texas, but they’re working on it.
In today’s paper there was an article about a knucklehead who decided to fly without a license or medical clearance. Now, he and his wife have owned a flying service for a number of years up there, so you’d have to wonder why he would do such a thing.
Well, I’ll tell you: he decided that he is now a Sovereign Citizen (surprised?) and not beholden to governmental rule. Thing is, he nearly hit a plane coming in on approach because he refused to get clearance from the tower. Despite his additional stupidity in court with the judge, he is now facing three years in the slammer and several hundred thousand dollars in fines. I really hope they throw the book at him.
The only “advantage” Texas has in this regard is the number of people. If you look at it percentage-wise…
The article says that he has a passport, so his pretense of disengagement from the federal government is particularly weak.
Palmer Municipal Airport appears to be an out-of-control uncontrolled airport. No tower. But you’re supposed to announce your intentions over Unicom.
Note that we already have a thread on Sovereign Citizens here in the Pit, where this incident is being discussed.
Y’know, I thought there might be, but didn’t conduct a search before I saw this particular topic.
Spreading the word about the loony club isn’t a bad thing regardless.
