I am pretty sure mine is a Royal portable with the hardshell case, but not sure where it is. My dad had the beige Smith-Corona with that awesome sandy texture (higher profile, a bit less portable). As I recall, they both gave the ding when you got to the right margin pointer, not when you hit the lever. And, of course, neither had a “1” key: you had to use “l”.
I gave a friend a typewriter and we had to explain that to his daughter (a professional writer), and she had a hard time believing it. Though she did like the “one-half” key.
Then, we showed her how to make an exclamation point: type a period, backspace, and type the straight single quotation mark over it.
I had one of those during my early teens.
The good old days. 
Did you show her how to delete? I was really happy in high school* to get a typewriter that would backspace and take out letters. It was so much better than using whiteout, and waiting for it to dry, and then re-rolling the page, and trying to line up on the blank space to type the correct letter. If you didn’t do it right, then you’d have to try it all again. It was still better than re-typing the page.
After that you can tell her the stories of TVs without remote controls. 
*right before the Apple IIs came out. I was even happier to see that!)
Or our first semi-remote that had one button: “Channel Up”, and you pressed that button hard, it whacked a piece of metal inside. This created a high-pitched tone that told the TV to change channel.
So of course, if someone could make that specific frequency with a prepubescent falsetto [wiggles eyebrows], that someone’s sister would suddenly have her program change from Petticoat Junction to Rin Tin Tin… “Gee, Betty Jo sure looks hairy. Must be a full moon in Hooterville.”
Look, I’m just enjoying the hijack hijinks because we’re light on trolls (thanks, mods!), but if there’s real news, I’ll stop.

It was a really stupid hill to die on – I remember Clothy’s gleeful “Ha, I trolled you all, and andy’s a dope for believing me!” in the linked thread.
In fact the thread is called “Clothahump defends usage of ethnic slurs”… Check it out and be proud of the intellectualism on display here at the Dope.
What is disturbing about that thread is the posters who came forward to argue the point on Clothy’s side: “Wetback is not racist.”

I’m constantly surprised and annoyed at the idea that this board chases off Conservatives.
Half of them get themselves banned for their words or actions. Insults, trolling and hate speech. No one made them do those things, but they are quite typical for American Conservatives, who mock the left as ‘snowflakes’ who can’t take criticism then show themselves to be exactly that.
And no one can ‘chase you off’ unless constantly mocking your positions fallacies and hatred bugs you so much you run away, in which case people aren’t actually chasing you, you’re running away from your own lack of ability to defend your positions.
And maybe that’s just it. There’s no shortage of intelligent liberals on this board who have no problems poking holes in conservative positions and propaganda and all too many conservatives who don’t know how to defend their own positions in a logical and consistent manner.
Hell, I had that same discussion with a friend and his friend last night, where the conservative FoF just kept making fallible assertions over and over, getting angry and throwing insults, while being completely unable to answer any questions about his positions, which were to a one, slippery slope arguments. :rolleyes:
