IMO, anyone who joins a message board to overshare about their intestinal distress is questionable. A standing member who asked that question, sure. No problem. New member? I got questions.
On the other hand, a new member who was only familiar with the kinds of questions that made it into one of the books might think this is par for the course here.
Empathy and benefit of the doubt are at least as viable as ways to approach new members as instant suspicion. Calling out new members for their first post because it strikes you as odd is one of the things that people have complained about on this board as a reason why we don’t get more new members.

But you’re describing every online forum ever. Being suspicious of being trolled is normal. That doesn’t mean you flat out call them trolls, but new people who act in certain ways are suspicious.
The thing is, if you’re not on the watch for trolls, then you also become a less attractive place to be: because trolls are constantly causing problems and making you look dumb.
As long as you’re not rude to these other people, I don’t really see the harm in suspicion. If they’re legit, that suspicion will decrease over time.
It is better that ten trolls deceive, than that one Hershey-squirter suffer.
Is it rude to question someone’s honesty and good intentions on minimal grounds? Is it possible and sensible to keep your suspicions to yourself pending further evidence?

I spent a lot of yesterday reading Wikipedia articles on the works of H. Rider Haggard, and I prefer a more melodramatic narrative, such as that he and his young protege unlocked an iron box which turned out to contain the Sherd of Amon-Rexall. He translated the writing on the Sherd, which led to the loginid and corresponding password. And NOW the adventure can get started!
BTW, fschwartz, there was a database hack a few years ago, that led to concerns that our passwords had been compromised. You might want to think about changing yours.
Don’t worry too much about it. There really are trolls around here (if you want to read this entire thread, you’ll learn more about that; although I could recommend better long and old threads to spend your time on). The revelation this year about Russian trolls infiltrating our social media sites through services like Cambridge Analytica has led to a quasi-joking suspicion that supporters of the America-hating fuckstick are paid Eastern Europeans.
Not that anyone is accusing you of being a supporter of the A-HFS. So it’s just a Board in-joke.

That’s a bit of a stretch. Seemed to just be saying that sexual attraction to anyone past puberty is within the normal range, so a sensible psychological definition of pedophile is not congruent with the legal age of consent.
