On the clock - 2008 NFL Draft

Gotta catch 'em all.

Brian Brohm and Henne are both still available. They might be worth a second round pick for the Packers.

The Redskins should grab Mario Manningham with their next pick. They’ll have their whole crew set.

I’m kind of hoping the Cowboys grab him first. While there is some need for a Safety and TE, I don’t see either contributing as much as a 3rd or 4th WR. I think Pat Watkins will be a good FS, so if we can keep Hamlin and move him to SS we’re pretty good there.

Will the Dolphins trade up and grab Henne or Brohm. How about dem Bears? You want one or the other?

All reasonable offers considered…

One down, one to go.

The NFL network commented that with Jake Long, Chad Henne might be a good pick for the 'phins. He’s also one of the most ‘ready to play’ QBs, which they could use as well. With two picks in the next five or so, it could be a good possibility.

Packers get Brohm. Good, if he holds their future in their hands we’re in good shape. That leaves Henne if the Bears are willing to be proactive.

I think Brohm is great value at 53. I can’t say I’m absolutely thrilled, but given Aaron Rodger’s injury history, it’s a smart, high value pick.

Now it’s time for the Bears to maybe target Colt Brennan in the late 3rd/early 4th round. Get a little more help on the offensive side to help out.

Timmy Chang is still available. And he hasn’t been convicted of a crime.

Well it looks like the Eagles are done for today. I rate their draft pretty highly, all things considered.

If you take this at face value, they drafted a WR who was projected by almost everyone as a first round pick. They got a fanatical DT who seems to be the perfect backup based on scouting reports. So they used two picks and got a 1st round quality WR and a second round quality DT, sounds about right. Except they also got a second 1st round pick next season… a huge take for them.

If you had told me the Eagles would draft a 1st round quality WR, a backup DT with a great motor (and one of the best run tacklers in the nation last season), AND got a 2009 1st rounder? I’d be ecstatic. The Eagles also picked up a couple 4th round picks. I like the strategy, and though I really dislike Desean Jackson, I can’t argue with the results. The Eagles still have Lito, and a ton of picks tomorrow to possibly make a package deal for a player or more picks next year. For a potential playoff team, that’s a great place to be in.

I give them a B- to a B.

Well, I don’t know that everyone had any 1st round rated WRs.

Peter King still has a shot at his prediction for the Brown’s first pick: CB Charles Godfrey.

Guys I want with the next Packer pick:

Dan Connor
Reggie Smith
Tyvon Branch
Patrick Lee

the others I like can wait until tomorrow…

He was never convicted of anything.

And the more I think about it taking a chance on Josh Johnson might be a better move, I don’t like spread offense guys very much.

What about Booty?

Huh, we replaced Fasano higher than I thought we would. At least Martellus Bennett is a quick TE, Tony Curtis is more of a blocking/goal line TE.

Can I just point out that in the mock draft thread, I had the Packers taking Patrick Lee and then Dallas taking Martelles Bennett in these exact spots?

"Green Bay Packers

A lot of what I said 4 picks ago still holds. They still need a CB, and DaJuan Morgan would be an upgrade at S. Jamaal Charles is also still available. But I think that they go with a guy who seems to be all over the draft boards, some I’ve seen have him a first rounder and others have him in the 3rd or even 4th. But he’s a big, strong CB, who may be a bit of a reach here.

Green Bay Packers select Patrick Lee, CB, Auburn.

Dallas Cowboys:

And, oddly enough, I’m going to ignore everything I just said. I think Dallas has the luxury of being damn good, and so they don’t really NEED anything. And I think Jerry Jones is a big fan of talented players with huge upside. Against all logic and need:

Dallas Cowboys select Martelles Bennett, TE, Texas A & M"

I’m not a fan. I imagine he’ll get taken in the 3rd round and he isn’t worth it. The lesser known guys that are bigger projects who will be available in the 4th or 5th rounds are more interesting. Odds are anyone you draft at this point is a long-shot so best to get someone with upside, Booty has a weak arm, is immoble, played on a team that was far more talented than it’s competition and simply will never be anything greater than a clipboard holder. The other guys at least have the arm to start someday.

Very few QBs who played in stacked powerhouse systems turn out to be good. All the talent around them allows them to essentially play without adversity and never have to elevate their game to succeed. Booty is the same guy as Ken Dorsey, Jason White, Brian Greise and Chris Sims.

Best of who is left:

Dan Connor, LB, Penn State
Reggie Smith, CB, Oklahoma
Tyvon Branch, CB, Connecticut
Jamaal Charles, RB, Texas
Pat Sims, DT, Auburn
Mario Manningham, WR, Michigan

Henne > Brohm >> Ryan >>>>>>>>>> Flacco. Just getting it on the record. In five years I will link to this, then point & laugh. Unless I’m way wrong, in which case I’ll pretend this post never happened.
