On the clock - 2008 NFL Draft

McFadden does indeed go fourth. No surprises so far, with some options about to be narrowed down. What’s the consensus for KC - Dorsey, with Gholston going to the Jets?

KC just traded away Allen, don’t they look to replace him here?

I think Glenn Dorsey slipping to this point will make one of those teams coveting a DT able to trade up. The Chiefs don’t seem to have a guy they want at #5 and will probably be eager to trade back with the Saints or Bengals. The #2 pick may have been too rich but the 5th is more attainable.

Ideally the Chiefs will keep the pick and draft Dorsey which means the aren’t drafting Albert, the man I want to slide to the Bears.

ETA: Let’s all pray that Dorsey doesn’t slide to the Pats. That just wouldn’t be good for anyone.

There’s the report of New Orleans actively pursuing Dorsey. I like that idea, I hope they can pull the trigger.

It’s endlessly fascinating to me how much a player’s career depends on where they end up. I think that the reason so many players at the top of the draft end up as busts, and so many mid to late rounders turn out to be great, has much to do with the teams they end up. Poorly run organizations, perpetually operating at the top of the draft board, just don’t seem to know how to mold their picks into good players.

How good has Atlanta been, historically? Not very good, so it is entirely likely that Ryan will flounder for a few years before becoming a journeyman backup. Meanwhile, another QB with a decent arm will get picked up by a solid team in a few rounds and will blossom into a pro-bowler, primarily because he’s protected by a solid offensive line or blessed with brilliant receivers. We’ll all look back and chuckle about how nobody predicted his greatness on draft day, but the truth will be that his selection later in the draft was largely responsible for why he turned into a successful pro.

Mark my words: NFL defenses will one day rue the day that Joe Flacco lines up against them. Matt Ryan, meanwhile, will never earn as much money as he does when he signs his first contract.

I would take Ryan over Flacco in a heartbeat, not because I’m smitten with Ryan, but because I don’t think Flacco is going to develop into anything better than, say a JP Losman. And even that is a couple years down the road.

So far, this draft is all chalk. No surprises at all, and not as much draft intrigue as I thought would be out there. Hopefully someone (don’t disappoint us now, Jets) will make a bad move.
I want to hear Radio City Music Hall erupt in tears. I’ve already predicted it to the girlfriend who’s watching along with me (until the Lions pick, at least). Then I get to cry.

I agree. I think Ryan might be better than you think but I think Flacco is the perfect prospect. I desperately want the Bears to make a trade to land him one way or another.

I’m shocked that there have been no trades so far.

I like it! I’m using that.

Jets have to take Gholston, right?

Can I turn this into a zombie thread in five years? We’ll see who’s right.

Meanwhile, do you think the decreased time between picks reduce the likelihood of any draft day trading?

I can’t wait to see what the Jets do. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that they’ll take Gholston and the fans will probably cheer that. It’s a little disappointing to think they might not crush their fans once again.

Although I think Gholston will be a bust…the fans just don’t know it yet.

Sure. I’ll even buy you a beer if Flacco is better than Ryan by that time.

I think it will. The fact that no one traded up to get Dorsey seems like evidence of that. Almost have to wonder if we see more players getting traded after they are drafted instead of before. Would anyone be shocked if Dorsey were traded sometime between now and the Saints pick?

Most teams milk the clock anyway. I’m sure they could do more with more time, but I don’t think it will prevent any trades. There is plenty of time to discuss deals in ten minutes.

What do I get, I’ve been slurping Flacco for about 3 months now in the other thread.

For the first time in years we don’t have a guy stuck in the green room for 2 hours. I’m disappointed in the NFL, I love that storyline. 6 for 6 on green room guys.

Flacco’s man jizz. And a beer to wash it down.

Let’s see if the chalk holds up: every sportswriter and his mom is expecting New England to trade this pick, mostly likely to Cincinnati or New Orleans.

Boo. They didn’t cry. I prefaced the Jets’ pick by showing my girlfriend this video.

As opposed to his monkey jizz? Hmm…can I get a side of cheese curds with that?

As I said upthread, I think it depends mainly on what team he ends up with. I was just using Flacco as an example as a later pick (not to say that I won’t demand my beer when he turns out better than Ryan, though). But it’s the team, and its particular circumstances, more than the player.

Having said that, if anybody needs to pick a bust, it’s the fucking Patriots. Nobody deserves a shitty pick more (says the Dolphin fan).
