On this date in the MMP

Boo, your house sounds like mine, which was built in 1890. You wouldn’t believe the quote we were given for a screen door for the back porch.

Which mystery writer is your favourite? Donna Andrews is my favourite of the ones still writing.

Well, consarn it*, it’s supposed to be safe to go out in the sunshine after 3 PM. So I went for a walk, and I started sensing the sun was too much for the lupus, so I came home, but now I’m feeling weird.

Would someone who loves August please tell me why? I need to hear some positives about it instead of telling myself every day we’re one step closer to cooler weather.

dot, I have a friend whose husband had ECT. It seriously messed with his short-term memory, but he got it back. He was also confused for a few hours after each treatment. It did help his depression dramatically. My friend said she felt like she got her husband back again.

Do you have someone helping you out, like making sure you eat? Your landlady sounds like a good soul. I hope your roommate is helpful. Hang in there.

I LOVE old houses. They have personalities, and I like to think they’ve absorbed the love, laughter, tears and tragedies of all those who’ve lived there. They do tend to develop foundation problems, though, especially those built before 1940. But there are so many wonderful things about that house, I hope the issues are fixable. The kitchen needs a makeover, but there’s a lot of potential there.

  • When I was teaching, I had to avoid swearing lest I forget and say a bad word in class. As a result, I sound like Yosemite Sam.

@SurrenderDorothy I’m new to the MMP and don’t know everyone yet, but it sounds like you’re going through some difficult, heavy stuff. I’m so sorry. I hope the tooth thing gets fixed. I wish you peace and healing. :hugs:

I built a raccoon excluder. Now we just have to wait for them (five of them) to come out from under the house.

That happened to me during one of my series of ECT. My dentist made me a soft custom mouth guard to wear during my treatments. Like the ones football and soccer players wear or people who grind their teeth during the night. It helped a lot. If you ever want to ‘talk’ about ECT or similar stuff, PM me.

I have never read her but I did just go on line and put a hold for her “Die Like An Eagle” with my public library. I’ll let you know when I get it.

My favorite mystery authors, in no particular order:
John Sanford
Lee Child
Micheal Connolly
Patricia Cornwell
Sue Grafton
Faye Kellerman
J.A. Jance
Dana Stabenow
Nevada Barr
CJ Cox
Craig Johnson
David Baldacci
David Da Silva
Alex Kava
David Housewright
And 47 more…

Sorry, I can not think of a redeeming thing about August (or July) except it gets us closer to fall. I am heat intolerant in temperament, meaning when it gets hot, I have a temper and am intolerable.

I once lived in an old house in Boston (as poor graduate students caretakers for the Historical Society) that was built in 1661. It was such an amazing house and it did feel like I was there with all the joys and tragedies and births and deaths and love stories of the three centuries of people who lived and loved in it before me. Makes the house I have now in its toddlerhood.

Boo

*yes, I know I messed up the quoting format on SCAdian. Didn’t know how to fix it so I hope I can be forgiven. Afraid if I tried I would have to start all over again and didn’t have it in me.

My favorite mystery author is Raymond Chandler.

If a raccoon excluder excludes raccoons, why will they come out from under the house? Are they not already excluded from the excluder by definition?

sari, provided that the foundation is sound and some other things, that looks like an amazing project house. And I love the she shed that goes with. Frankly, there isn’t much within 70 miles of Nashville that I would live in for that price. Either the house is crap or the neighborhood is.

Feel better soonest nettie!

boo, your list of mystery authors is remarkably like mine.

I grew up in a house that was built in 1860. My dad still lives there. Old housed do have personality, but this one will be purchased from the estate when my dad goes to be knocked down and have a new house built on the lot. The foundation has been on life support for a lot of years and let’s just say that the layout pretty much sucks (bed sitters were pretty common in the era it was built, so you have to go through a warren of small rooms upstairs). It’s livable, but no bank would lend money on it.

Irked, knocked off at 1:30, bought groceries, came home, finished tidying up the studio and took Nelson to the dog park. Ribs with mac and cheese, green beans and cornbread for supper. Burrrrrrrp!

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

That bodes well for both of us:books::open_book::books::slightly_smiling_face:

The only really good thing I found about August was that if I didn’t finish my coffee before I went into the store it would still be warm when I went back out to eat lunch.

Boo and missred, my #1 favourite mystery author is Phoebe Atwood Taylor – the Asey Mayo series. Elizabeth Linington is another favourite. She wrote three series of police procedurals, one under her own name, one as Leslie Egan, and one as Dell Shannon. I also recommend the Alafair Tucker series by Donis Casey. I read the complete Anna Pigeon series (by Nevada Barr) earlier this year; there were some good books there, but after the last two I doubt I’ll read another one.

They need to vacate, so that they can be excluded.

DH and I are both somewhat better, but severely lacking in energy. This does not bode well for getting our mutual act together for dealing with his surgery on Wednesday. Frozen pizza for dinner again (at least we managed to agree on one). Walmart delivery for Sunday in assembly, with emphasis on things like snacks for DH during the time when he’ll be limited in mobility and I’ll be at irk.

Triple digits in Sacramento for at least another week. DO. NOT. WANT. Someone needs to turn down the thermostat!

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to sort. Then hockey.

Pros: The fencing makes it easily zombie proof, and would allow Gordie to extend his anti Invisible Mole People perimeter.
Cons: The roof/upstairs celing issues.
At the least, find out if the lotion is included with the basement.

You do have some redeeming qualities.

Dots, eek! Hope they can get you in to fix that.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 77 Amurrkin out and rainyish with a predicted high of 87 {BRRR!) and rainy for the day. Thus the big plan of the day is to be inside da cave and dry. I foresee much Netflix bingin’ and sloth. Fine by me. Any need to feed today will be via forage as we have plenty of sammich makin’s and so forth. I shall, however, yank a beastloaf outta da freezer for tomorrow. Cabbage, mac 'n cheese, cornbread and ‘nanner puddin’ shall accompany.

BBBOO FWIW I am glad you have ice cream in your freezer.

Dots YIKES! Hope the tooth doc can get you fixed up ASAP.

Nettie glad DH and you are feelin’ better. Here’s hopin’ his surgery goes well and he heals fast.

Flyboy a raccoon excluder sounds like sump’n one would order from Acme.

Sari the house looks way cool. If it’s the house you want, so may it be.

Now I need more caffeine and rumbly tummy demands sustenance. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Sattidy Y’all!

Slept with Mel, so I had a pretty decent night for a change. But this morning, I have a hissing of sorts in my left ear. I’m hoping it’s from maybe sleeping with my head smashed weirdly on the left side, but I don’t know. I just hope it subsides soon - it’s very annoying.

And I awoke confused, compounded when I turned on my computer and it told me that it’s Saturday. Fortunately, it’s a good confused - one day closer to our houseguests leaving! They head back to Missouri on Moanday morning. Whew! I’ll do a little laundry today, and I’ve got some herbs to be planted and a set of pots to plant them in, so I think that will be accomplished today. Except for the cilantro - ick. Anybody want some cilantro seeds? PM me your address and they’ll be in the mail today!

Rainy today and tomorrow, nice Mon and Tues, then rain returns. At least the temps are lower, tho the humidity remains insane. Autumn can’t arrive too soon for me!

Happy Saturday!!

I’m so sorry your tooth got broken during your treatment. (Note: nitpicking that YOU didn’t break a damn thing.) I hope at least the E.C.T. people will pay for the repairs & for a mouth guard to prevent future accidents.

MOOooooommm oh I luuurves cilantro. I have attempted to send you a P.M. with my address - my apologies if I inadvertently started a new thread or something instead.

Yesterday was bloody hot. Today is predicted by the oracles to be somewhat less hot. Not enough. I am so. over. this. heat. All the locals assure me it’s “never like this around here” which is … well, I was going to say it’s cold comfort, but … :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Envelope is addressed and ready to go!

And speaking of going - daughter’s friends decided to leave today. HUZZAH! Peace shall reign!! Higgs really hated them for some reason - she’d bark like crazy way too much. I’m glad my daughter got to see her, but I’m gladder the visit is over.

Morning all. Got up at 0630 and I suspect nappage is likely later. Need to do a little shopping but nothing much else is on the schedule. Heading back towards 90F today, oh joy, and looks like the rain has all gone to visit swampy this weekend.

FCM, guests are nice but they can overstay their welcome. Sounds like they’re leaving at the appropriate time.

Dot, take care, get the tooth repaired, and be well.

Nettie, saw the heat there, incredible. Hope the surgery goes well.

Not a big mystery reader, I do have the entire Nero Wolfe collection by Rex Stout, an oldie but a goodie.

flyboy, let us know if the excluder works, or if the racoons figure out a way around it.

OK, need to refreshen and seach the refrigerator for sustenance. All y’all have a good weekend.

I hear Bay City is nice this time of year.

When I was on the boat I kept telling the nukes they should do something about the heat. “It’s a nuclear furnace, isn’t it?” They all came back with the feeble excuse that the sun is fusion, and they were only trained to work on fission plants…

flyboy, can you rverse polarity on the thing and make it a raccoon includer?

Currently 70, partly NOS, with a predicted high of 80. Only supposed to be 76 the next two days, but then it goes back up into the 80s. I’m fed, working on caffeine, and trying to work up enough energy to get dressed…
