How does one get started in a one-man band? Are there classes? Do you need to be versed in a number of instruments, first? Are there groups for such a thing? Do you need to assemble the parts yourself, or can you purchase kits? What kind of person normally finds themself doing that sort of thing? Is it normally a family thing (ex: “My father was a one-man band, so I’m going to be, too”)? Do people do this as their main occupation, or is it only a hobby sort of thing?

I have a friend who gigs as a one man band of sorts.
He plays guitar, keyboard, and sings, all quite well. He has his keyboard set up to play drum tracks, and plays guitar while singing, sometimes recording loops with a pedal that does it, and playing some fills with the keyboard. Basically, you use equipment you have, get what you need, and practice practice practice.
One thing that can work well is if you have a computer with a drum sequencer, and know how to use it well. Program all your drum tracks with it, then you can convert them to mp3’s, practice to them until you know them like the back of your hand, then go forth and entertain!!
Oh, and to find places to entertain at, just grab a phone book in the bars and nightclubs listings, and start calling.

Well, that certainly sounds neat, but I was thinking more of the kind of people who wander around parks with instruments strapped all over themselves.
