Silkythreat, one of our very own, has had a house fire. She and her husband and children are living with a family member and are physically fine, if shaken. They are looking for a camper or something to place in their yard so they can live there until the house is repaired.
She has mail only access for the moment, and then only at work, so if you choose to mail her, keep it brief and to the point, I’m sure she doesn’t need trouble with her employer.
In fact she’ll be fine. Her and her husband are employed and healthy, and they have insurance which will help though not completely fix things.
She has not asked for help, or money, nor pity, and doesn’t need any of those things, in fact, she’s asked for absolutely nothing at all.
I’m here, asking for your prayers and thoughts and well wishes. Whatever the case, I would not wish this on anyone, anywhere, and to be involuntarily homeless during the holiday season is a downright shame. I have asked her permission to post this, and she somewhat grudgingly agreed; I know at this moment all the good karma we can send her way collectively can only enrich her life and ours.
And remind us to show gratitude for the roof over our own heads.
aw, geez… When I was a kid, some friends of ours lost everything in a fire on Christmas Eve. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but I have an inkling of what Silky and family are going thru.
I’m sending my best wishes to the whole lot of them, with a few hugs and all the good vibes I can muster.
I’m so sorry to hear this Silky. A week before Thanksgiving 2000, we went through the same thing. We lost all of our tangibles, and the house was totalled, but we all made it out safely.
I remember, that morning, going to WalMart to replace the essentials, and looking at my wife, and at the cart, and after 20 years of working towards better things, realizing how quickly it can all go away. The insurance company can replace a lot of the things that are lost, but I still can’t sleep comfortably.
It’s a horrible experience, but “things” mostly can be replaced, but people cannot. I’m thankful that your family is safe, but be prepared to face an aggravating year.
If you’d like any advice, feel free to e-mail me. Dealing with the insurance companies is not an easy task, and I’d be happy to provide any insight I can.
I lost my apartment in afire a couple of months ago. I lost all most everything but my computer, TV and kitchen stuff so I know how bad it can be. Be thankfull that no one got hurt.
Our fire was an attic fire, and not one detector went off (and we had several) 'cos all the smoke was above. Every site I’ve visited has been against putting alarms in the attic, due to the heat, and possible false alarms. 10 minutes after I got the family out, I was still inside, trying my best to put out the blaze, and as the firefighters arrived and tossed me out, as I was leaving, I saw my kitchen ceiling fall, and nothing but fire and the night sky above.
[slight hijack]I wonder why they don’t make alarms specifically for the attic that can withstand the heat, and only signal the smoke. [/slight hijack]
I’m so sorry for the trauma, but deeply grateful that the Silky family are all safe and sound. Some dear possessions can never be replaced, but if all the dear people survive, new memories can fill in the gaps over time.
Silky hasn’t asked for help but be sure that they will be in my thoughts and good wishes.
Hope all is going as well as can be expected for the Silky family. It’s particularly horrible to have this happen this close to
Christmas, and I’m thinking the best of thoughts for you all.
Sometimes we may find the Christ child living in a relatives home and waiting for relief. I will pray for Silky and her family. Is there anything else we can do?
