The Wikipedia link has a couple other examples of these videos, and I love them all. I’m fascinated by their creative styling. Any more examples you guys want to contribute?
I remember watching Russian Ark in film class and, despite being otherwise wholly mediocre, the sheer amount of intricate planning it must have taken to shoot the thing in one long extended take blows my mind-- people walking by at just the right time, the camera threading through rooms and catching snippets of conversation… amazing!
ETA: Ooooh, I didn’t even realize that the 1 2 3 4 song was the one from the ipod commercial. I always tapped my foot to that song but I never knew what it was. Now I do!
My first thought was this incredible Kylie Minogue video, but I guess it may not count since there is some clear editing although I don’t think there are any cuts.
Virtual insanity and Try both have cuts but both also have long takes as well. with Try I think they may have shot Michael all in one take but the other cuts done separately
R.E.M.'s “Imitation of Life” [link goes to video] is technically one-shot - it’s just one shot that has been run forward, backwards and panned-and-scanned over.
Coincidentally, a Michael Penn song came up on my iPod as I was writing my previous post. I have his first three albums, but that’s out of more than 2800 tracks on my iPod.
I just remembered two nice Radiohead examples: Knives Out & Karma Police (almost a one-shot).
Also, it doesn’t qualify, but Bjork’s "Bachelorette " has a fun scene near the end where the entire video is reenacted for the stage.
