In my search for a place to host private Texas hold ‘em play money tournaments (see this thread), I am finally getting somewhere. I have found a site that will allow us to have our own scheduled private tournaments for a 10¢ buy in fee per player. Now that I’m finally getting somewhere on that end of things, that leaves me with one problem. I need you! So far it seems Otto and Spurious George are interested. I figure once we get at least ten Dopers who want in, we can get the games going.
FYI, I am not looking to make any money from this; I’m just looking for some good competition. I have set up a mail group for us with a message board so we can keep track of dates and a tally of players wins and losses ( if not playing for money, at least you’ll have braggin’ rights) etc. We can also vote on issues such as playing for modest amounts of money just to make things more interesting.
If interested, e-mail me and I’ll send you more info along with an invitation to join the mail group. C’mon guys (and gals), lets get this going!

Would this be something a total novice could do? I wouldn’t want to play for real money, but I could spend a dime per hand? game? I’ve never played a single hand of texas hold em. I don’t know the rules from my elbow, and I’ve only watched a few moments of some televised games. You don’t get anymore clueless than me. However, I’m good at any card game I’ve played and I’m competetive.
There’s a bar/grill on the ground floor of my office building that has Texas Hold’em nights. And they are starting to play it at nearby Decatur Georgia’s Eddie’s Attic. I’d love to be able to do either one sometime, but know what the hell I was doing.
Here’s some rules and basic strategy which look to be a little more specific to limit games. If you have cable, check out the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel. It airs Wednesday night and repeats Saturday evening. Bravo also has the Celebrity Poker Showdown airing Thursday nights and repeating throughout the week.
Hey vision, does this site you found have limit, no-limit or both? My preference would be for no-limit.

In the mean time, I recommend that you learn a little about the rules of play here here and here.
Then get some practice at pokerroom.com. You can sign up for free and you can play for free ( and its one of the few sites where you don’t even have to download software).
Once you’re a member, under “TOURNAMENTS”, click on “play tournaments”. A pop-up will appear and you will see two tabs near the upper left hand corner. One is labled “Multi - table” the other “Single - table” . Click on “Single - table”. Use your cursor to slide down to the “play money games” and choose a table that has " NL HE" under the “game” heading. That stands for No-limit Hold 'em. The type that the group will be playing. No limit means there is no limit to the amount of money you can bet or raise another players bet. Now don’t go losing your play money too fast!
Definitely No-limit Otto, the only way to go!

Ditto what Giraffe said. I don’t know how often I’ll be able to play, but when I get a chance, I’d love to get in on the action. It’s a shame nobody can see your face online, though- I do a great “unfazed.”
Maybe it’s just as well I can’t join in. I went to pokerroom-dot-com and played with some play money and got spanked. Went broke twice in a couple hours. Not my fault, I think I made all the right decisions, but one time I had pocket aces that got busted and the other time I had the nut straight but got beat by a nut flush. Both times on the river. I don’t think I made a draw one time the whole night.
C’mon Otto, get a pc already. Don’t you see how limited you are with a Mac?

OK, I think we have enough Dopers to get the show on the road. I posted some messages on the message boards at the “Dopers only” mail group. For those of you who didn’t get an invite yet, you’ll get one tonight ( I’m running late). What you have to do is have a Neteller account (similar to Pay Pal) and deposit $20 in at Pokertropolis.com ( more info at Dopers only ). Like I said, each tournament should only cost .10 ( thats what admin. at Pokertropolis told me they would do for us), so $20 will go a long way. All they’re asking for is a 10% rake. So for your .10 deposit, you have the chance of walking away with .90! Yippee!!
Once one other person ( besides myself ) is set up, we can have a two man trial tournament and let the others know how it went.
I am SO not going to play poker against someone named “x-ray vision”. Do I look stupid? (Don’t answer that.)
