Leaper1, surprisingly (not).
It is Pokertropolis. It is a smallish site for ring games, but their interface is competent enough and their table graphics are just dandy. It is not as clean as Party, but I generally have no complaints above what was mentioned before (although they are taking their time about getting my $190 back out of them).
Meeting up with a Doper and getting to play cards was great though, and X-Ray failed to mention that I got very lucky with my cards, getting QJo three times in four hands and hitting a straight with one and a full house with another. I will surely get my comeuppance when we next meet!

Okay, I went ahead and signed up on Pokertropolis last night under the handle “TJ Black”. When are we playing? Anyone want to play tonight around 8pm pacific time?
I’m still cutting my teeth over on pokerroom.com. I’ve dwindled down to $100 of my original $1500 allotment of play money. 
But I’m having fun and I did make one $400 haul. I’ll come join the tournament fun once I don’t completely suck 
I can make no guarantees, as I’m taking the wife out to dinner tonight and who knows what else, but if I’m around, I’m game to play in either a tournament or ring game. As far as I know though, only XRay knows how to set up a private tourney. If he sees this, and can set something up ahead of time, we can all go in and register at our leisure. 11pm eastern works for me, again assuming I can make it.

You should go ahead and sign up at Pokertropolis and play. The tourney fees are obscenely small for us ($.10 though I would be all for bumping it up to $1 or so in time if everyone else is cool with it) so you are not having to freak out about losing a fortune. Even if we play ring games down the road, they will be for nanolimits like this as well, and who knows, in a group of friends, we may be able to help one another with critique of one’s play.
Oh, and because I’m not posting ENOUGH messages to this thread already…
I finally got $190 of the $200 deposit that I made, and although I haven’t verified it yet, I got a mail that said I still made the $50 signup bonus. I cannot withdraw it yet (you have to play 600 raked hands at small limits or 200 at higher limits), but it seems that I CAN use it to play with. Assuming this is true, it may be worth depositing the $200 into the site if you can and then just withdraw most of it a few days later. Admittedly they were a little slow about getting the cash back to me (3 days), but I at least did not have to jump through hoops to get it.
OK, I believe I sent an invitation to all interested in joining the Dopers Only mail group; if I missed you please let me know.
Once you have a cash account at Pokertropolis (more info on how to go about doing this in the mail group: groups.msn.com/dopersonly) with at least $20 deposited, e-mail me your Pokertropolis nickname and account number (not password) and I will add you to the Dopers Only group at the Pokertropolis web-site. Once you are part of the group, you are ready to play at any scheduled Dopers Only tournaments. Lets use the mail group as a way to coordinate tournament schedules. Please use your Straightdope screenname as your Pokertropolis name (or almost the same) so we can keep better track of who’s who.
I think it would be fun if we have “official” Dopers tournaments where we keep track of everyone’s standings on the mail group (and maybe post results here on MPSIMS here just for the hell of it).

I just wanted to post that I am home now and having not seen any new posts in our message group, to mention that I am still up for playing tonight, and am in the .25/.50 room at the moment… on their dime as the $50 they gave me IS playable (just cannot be withdrawn until I play 600 hands).
I can’t seem to join the group. When I click on the link in the email from xray, it says “I can’t seem to find that page.” Anyone else having problems?
No problems here. There was no private room set up for tonight, but I played in the one public room mentioned earlier and made $22, then played in a multiplayer tourney (51) and took 3rd for another $52 profit.
I was asking about the MSN group…
Ahhh, no idea then. I had a message in my inbox saying I was invited to the MSN group and just followed the link and then added the message group to my favorites. XRay is the admin on it so perhaps he knows something I don’t (he can surely know no less).

Do you have another e-mail address I can try Max? MSN doesn’t seem to like that one.
Now I’m having trouble connecting to Pokertropolis. It hangs running the version check program. I guess I’m nothing but trouble…
Okay, I reinstalled Pokertropolis and got in. I think I like it a little better than pokerroom.com. I’m TJ Black on both. When are we playing?
