Well, at my old house in east suburban Cleveland, my driveway used to be littered with acorns. Then again, considering that someone might have “a corn” on their foot … nope. Too gross. After those photos, I don’t even want to think of chestnuts.

Thanks Skip. Whatever faults OpalCat has, she doesn’t deserve harassment. If posters want to limit their association with her, or call her on what they believe is rude behavior, that’s one thing. Deliberate provocation is another.

Guys, I know you’re having fun here, but there are decaf brands which are just as tasty as the real thing. If OpalCat’s an attention whore, surely the wisest course would be to let the eleven page thread die.

IPS you’re thinking of the Horse-chestnut, which is in the Buckeye family and genus but ISN’T edible. Pic of the hairy nuts. The ones on the bottom right really show the flat sides where the nuts touch while still in the husk.

There’s some interesting stuff about the horse chestnut there:

During the two world wars, horse-chestnuts were used as a source of starch which in turn could be used via the Clostridium acetobutylicum fermentation method devised by Chaim Weizmann to produce acetone. This acetone was then used as a solvent which aided in the process of ballistite extrusion into cordite, which was then used in military armaments.

So apparently horse chestnuts help beat the Nazis.

Some mammals, notably deer, are able to break down the toxins and eat them safely. They are reputed to be good for horses with wind, but this is unproven and feeding them to horses is not advisable.

There’s no mention if they may be safely placed in the mouth to encourage the development of apple cheeks.

Sorry. I guess I was more subtle than I intended to be. I meant to label the “suggested” behavior as trolling to make it clear that it would be against the rules and that no one should actually do it. You’ll notice that I haven’t posted in that thread at all.
