Orange Is the New Black Season 3 [Open Spoilers]

Yup, got there. It was a bit underwhelming. She just has a stutter ? OK, I guess.

That being said, the play on silent looks between her and Red as Red got her kitchen back post-blessing, then later when the shit-food arrived post-evil eye was priceless.

Yeah, I think I was assuming it was something much deeper. Like something traumatized her. The stutter did make sense, though. We hear her sing in one episode, and don’t most stutters disappear when people sing? Well, according to Geoffrey Rush in The King’s Speech, they do!

I wasn’t sure how to read that. It seemed like Red assumed Norma did that on purpose–but was Norma trying to actively sabotage Red? Obviously Red’s overbearing nature was meant to parallel that of Norma’s husband…still, it did feel a bit out there.

Since she is/was into magic stuff, and she seems like such a nice person, I sort of assumed she’d wished harm on somebody in the heat of an argument and that somebody wound up getting hurt afterwards - hence Norma becoming frightened of her own voice and “power”.
And yes, some (I don’t know about most) stutterers manage to work around it through song.

I think the first time around Red was like “the fuck just happened ?”, then caught Norma smiling enigmatically (probably just happy for Red, really) and started wondering. The second time, Red was sure, was freaked out and Norma finally found the strength to stand up for her own.
I think Soso’s right on the money on this one : people project whatever they want onto Norma’s silent stare, then they convince themselves it’s what Norma is actively telling them.

I don’t think she actively meant to sabotage Red, in fact I think she doubts having any power at all, she’s just happy to make people who believe in it happy, and if their giving Norma the credit accomplishes it then that’s fine. Rather, when her designated Overbearing Choice-dictating Person acknowledged her as something other than a mindless pawn, even for just a moment, something clicked. She’d just proven something to herself that pushing Guru Mike off a cliff didn’t quite accomplish.

You kinda have to wonder how doing that landed her in jail, though. No witnesses, no loved ones to wonder where Mike had disappeared to, nothing to tie her to the abandoned van really, if she’d just ran for it… she must have given herself up.

Just finished the season… this show used to have more of a plot to it. Now it just seems like a silly sitcom. Definitely had its funny moments (My favorite was when Piper’s brother’s wife was trying to concoct an artificial vag scent from tuna etc. and he walks in and says “You’re like Madam Curie… but stupid.”), but overall kinda meh.

I really want to know more about Space Admiral Rodcocker.

I think this was the weakest season but had some good stuff. The scene at the lake was great, nice to see everyone happy and having fun for a little bit. LeAnne’s back story was a surprise!

I started rewatching some of season 2 and noticed that in Poussey’s backstory, her mom is referred to as alive and well…but in season 3 didn’t she say her mom died when she was very young?

This is what I came here to ask. I thought I’d missed something. There isn’t any proof she pushed him; he could’ve jumped or slipped.

Kate Mulgrew. I LOVE her.

I’m still enjoying the show, but I agree this is the weakest season.

Yes, very true. Someone I talked to about it mentioned that maybe she’s just so honest and good that she confessed?

My theory is that Norma got away with pushing the guru off the cliff and went to jail for something else.
And by theory I mean wild assed guess.

Murder is not something you would go to federal prison for, unless you also committed some other federal crime.

Unless Norma somehow killed the guy on federal land, I think she’s in federal prison for other reasons.

I think the Amish girl and Flaca are also in prison for different crimes than what we saw in their flashbacks. The FBI wouldn’t be interested in prosecuting anyone for selling drugs unless the drugs were transported across state lines.

I was wondering, is it even a crime to do what Flaca did? She just sold blotter paper with water on it and only claimed that it was acid, which of course it wasn’t. And then, would she have any liability for the guy jumping off the roof (which tons of witnesses could confirm as obvious suicide) in either case of the drugs being real or not?

So what was up with the whole Bennett situation? He really did just up and leave? I kept expecting to see him again in the final episode. It seemed weirdly OOC to have him just disappear like that.

I’d love to read The Time Hump Chronicles, myself.

I think it’s because the actor got another gig–on How to Get Away with Murder.

I’m not trying to be a wet blanket, but I reported for a title change. Just asking to take “episode 1” out of the title, as this thread has spoilers for subsequent episodes. I’ll stay out of it now that I know, but I don’t want others to be surprised.

Thanks, lorene. Originally I thought there could be one thread per episode, like in previous seasons, but I think it’s better just to have one thread.

I’ll definitely rejoin when I’ve watched more. Love this series.

Oh, okay… I was wondering if I missed half the episode or something.

Yep. Selling fake drugs is a crime.

I don’t know if she could go down for homicide though. She intended to sell the fake LSD, but not to kill the guy. Therefore, she could would only be guilty under two situations:

  1. If she knew that her behavior created a risk that the guy would jump off the building but she disregarded the risk and sold him the drugs anyway. According to what we see on the show, this is not the case. Flaca had no clue that fake drugs would influence someone like real drugs.

  2. If she should have known her behavior created a risk the guy would jump off the building. This would mean she would go down for a version of negligent homicide, if her jurisdiction has such a statute. This would depend more on the jury, but it’s still a stretch to think that a reasonable person would know that selling water as LSD would lead to a suicide.
