Dolly always wants to turn it on when we sit down to supper. WhattamI gonna do, not eat?
We have 5 episodes to go for this season, then I’ll be done with it for a while. Thank goodness.

It’s probably safe to use unboxed spoilers, now, yeh? Boxing them makes the flow a little weird, so I’ll avoid that.
Finally finished the season…Happily, Taystee did move back to ‘likeable’ after her discussion with Soso. Black Cindy was also less annoying, but I think that was a function of having less screen time.
Was surprised by how much I enjoyed Leanne and Angie in the finale… Everything about their heel realization - that it came up when they were huffing bleach (…which is something that I can’t believe people do), the fact that Angie, the generally stupider of the pair - the stupidest of their old clique, even - was the one who realized it, the metaphor they used, and that their way of being ‘the good guys’ was arson - delighted me. Doesn’t really counter their behaviour when they had the gun, or toward Tucky, &c…but it was a great bit, even so.
Piscatella…he was kind of adorable with his inmate boyfriend, especially the ridiculous attempts to cover things up, but that didn’t make his capture by Team Red and ultimate Death by Irony any less satisfying. Don’t have a lot of sympathy for the dude he killed, but not really comfortable with the fact he could do that.
Speaking of sympathy, though…oof, Bailey. Honestly surprised he hasn’t committed suicide, by this point. Poussey’s father’s speech to him was perfectly true (or at least in line with how he understood the facts), but knowing what we know (which Mr Washington may or may not know, or believe), it hit pretty hard.
Morello talking Susanne (and other mentally ill patients) into going off her meds was probably the most infuriating non-violent thing anyone’s done on the show, and would have been even without seeing the results of Susanne unmedicated.
I was kind of annoyed by Piscatella’s slasher-movie-killer skill in being able to take multiple captives and render them instantly and silently unconscious. He get Piper and Alex in the shower and a third person already there hears nothing, not even a quickly-muffled “EEK!” ?
I was mildly amused by Alex and Piper in the shower-curtain mini-dresses Piscatella thoughtfully improvised for them, though. Add some high heels and they look ready to go clubbing.
I always feel that Russian accents on screen seem pretty forced, even though I have no basis for that feeling. Not like I know any Russians.
Except, now I do know some Russians, as my uncle married a Russian woman and I spend time with her and her son. Their accents don’t sound like the screen accents to me. I just met these Russians last year and instantly was happy to find out my suspicion about screen accents was correct ![]()
It’s like maybe the difference between trying a Russian accent and actually having one. I dunno. Of course “Russia” is a huuuuuuuuge place so there will be differences in accent. And then there are those actors who really are Russian or Ukranian that still sound “bad” to me. But my aunt’s accent is just so much more soft and natural than what Mulgrew has going on.
John Malkovich doing a Russian accent is, to me, what a real Russian should sound like.
I was disappointed in Red’s storyline this year, however. It was meatier at the end, but spending most of it on speed was a waste of Kate Mulgrew.
No Dr. Healy this time.
I’ll take a shot at answering that. I didn’t notice the make or model but assuming it’s 9mm probably 10 rounds minimum-15 rounds maximum. I don’t think his character would have a gun issued by the employer so it would have been anything available to civilians. It theoretically could be .40 or .45 caliber meaning bigger diameter bullets =fewer rounds fit in magazine. Somewhere on the internet there’s a site that catalogs make and models of guns used in movies and TV. I’ve followed links there but didn’t save it to my favorites.
In the Command Center, staff was told that there were ten inmates unaccounted for. And there were ten in the pool. But - two others (Chang and Tucky) had slipped out of the fence. Figuring that the MCC woman is included in the inmate count, that leaves only one missing, so I think it safe to assume that Chang was captured. I didn’t notice if there was a glimpse of her waiting for the bus, but that would make the missing inmate count correct, and Tucky will not be searched for.
Looking back over this season, one scene did wring a tear from this crusty, old viewer…
Nicky calling Vinnie and telling him to man up and do the right thing. I always liked Nichols and it must have been agonizing to make that call. Especially because it seemed to work.
I only count 9 at the pool -
1 Suzanne
2 Cindy
3 Taystee
4 Piper
5 Alex
6 Nicky
7 Red
8 Frieda
9 Blanca
With Chang escaped, Tucky at the CO housing, and Linda counted among the inmates, that squares.
I thought Gloria had returned.
Hmm. I don’t remember that. I’ll have to rewatch the finale.
Yeah Gloria did run down there to let them know that shit was dangerous upstairs.
Yep, ten in the pool.
Just too much absurdity.
Why didn’t more inmates going over the fence? There was a bit about staying for solidarity reasons but these are stupid criminals. That don’t care about that crap.
These were the same women who took advantage of an earlier hole in the fence to wander off to a lake (and more) en mass.
No big fighting between the prisoners? No one seeking to settle scores? C’mon.
The land lines were left open? Um, first things to be shut down. Along with the electricity and water.
Those people spending a day or more in the poo? They’d be dead from the heat. No way would Caputo have a functioning mind after all his time in there.
I know prisoners aren’t the brightest bulbs but most would know to drop and spread once the assault started. Exactly like they do when the alarms go off. Suddenly they forget this useful survival skill and run around like ninnies?
All sorts of ridiculous choices. E.g., putting on a guard’s uniform. The last thing you want to wear when the storm hits.
Pennsatucky and Donut? Holy crap. No, we don’t need that. Nope. Uh, uh.
How many examples of the “knockout blow” trope were in this? No one got killed or put into a coma by a magic blow.
It’s really left reality in the dust, or way back behind the dust.
Michael Harney (Healy) was credited for each episode this seasons (as usual). Guess how many he was in? Guess.

That makes 16 in a row.[/spoiler]
OTOH, the chemistry between Fig and Caputo is a joy to watch.
Litchfield is a federal correctional institution managed by private-operator MCC. Why was Figueroa there representing the Governor of New York? Yeah, the prison is located in New York, but the inmates are not New York’s problem. Why would the governor be involved in negotiating anything?
Consistency of such matters has not been a hallmark of this show. Several of the inmates seem to be in for state/local crime issues, not federal.
Just wanted to note that Yael Stone, who plays Morello from da Bronx, is actually Australian. We just finished watching an Australian mini-series called Deep Water on Netflix. It wasn’t bad.
So I finally finished this season, and how that finale was intense. Yeah, in real life most of the inmates would relocated to prisons all over US (or NYS for state inmates), Caputo would be gone, & the hostage staff wouldn’t want to return (this does leave the staff that never show up on camera). But this is a TV so any cast-members who renew their contracts will be back at Litchfield (maybe with another wholesale staff turnover save Luschek). Maria & Sophia could plausibly be written off as having their sentences commuted, more so Maria (mainly for the PR). Also I completely missed that Frieda’s bunker was a forgotten swimming pool until it was pointed out. :smack:
Agreed. I get the impression that Litchfield is supposed a state prison that houses some federal inmates under contract with the federal government. I’m not sure if that’s a real thing anymore, except prisoners awaiting trial in places where there’s no federal jail convenient to the federal courthouse.
Nobody’s started a thread for Season 6? Is it that bad?
For the early seasons, they couldn’t decide whether to give OITNB awards for Drama or for Comedy. From my viewpoint — I just started Episode 2 of Season 6 — they won’t have this dilemma anymore. Awards, if any, will be given for a Horror genre.
I’m 3 episodes into season 6 and I’d say yes, it’s that bad. In previous seasons I had commented that I was losing interest in the Piper character. Well, now she’s a character I actively and strongly dislike. Piper is actually the worst thing about this show by a long shot.
