Orchestral Windows startup sound bite?

I trying to find that swelling orchestral music that Windows made when it started up, perhaps XP. I think it had the name of a technology, like “Dolby” but not dolby. It was like surround sound with exaggerated stereo effects.

There’s an archive of startup sounds from many Windows versions here.

Here’s a bunch of them: Windows Startsounds

The 98 SE one sounds most like your description, to me at least.

Ninjaed!

Several of the Windows startup tunes remind me of the THX “Deep Note” sound… is that what you’re thinking of?

THX - that’s it! So I guess it was not an official Windows sound bite? But whatever, I had it on my computer and really used to crank it.

Same here! Whenever I got a new set of speakers or headphones, I’d play the THX sound to test them.

I can’t remember if that sound was ever included in Windows itself, but certainly a lot of video games and movies had it during their intro sequences. It’s less common now that spatial audio is pretty generically available, and THX itself doesn’t seem to be much of a going concern anymore, having been sold to a niche PC gaming company (Razer) a while back.

I thought Brian Eno did that sound, or maybe it was a different one.
