Order of the Stick - Book 5 Discussion Thread

THREE times, thank you: “Your momma so fat, she can’t see her feats.” --ibid

And Elans foot in mouth disease may be his best demontration that he’s not Nale.

Well, I count it as two times in total because those “your momma so fat” things happened all in one panel of comic #566 (all three of them, which would technically make it “four times” by your reckoning).

Ah, but (getting into the mind of minister Malack for a second), wouldn’t Nale be crafty enough to act in a completely stupid way that would undermine his own position, in order to disguise his intellect?

(of course, we know that, if Nale tried to do that, he would end screwing it up. Hmmm… There may be an undercurrent of similarity between the twins when it comes to stupidity --albeit a different flavour of stupidity in each case).

“OK, Honey. Quiet time.”
heh heh heh

That sounds SO real.

BTW, I saw a link to OOTS in another thread on this fine forum and was enthralled (quite literally) and read the entire online archive over the course of several lunch breaks.
And now I have found this thread and y’all are now stuck with me.

I don’t know much about 3.x rules, but I have been playing D&D and variants since 1974 (he said hopefully establishing his geek cred).

One of us! One of us! One of us! One of us!*

*If you want to establish REAL geek cred, you’ll know the original source for that line…

*"My breakfast isn’t done yet. I don’t want to start the talking stuff until after my breakfast.

Or wait! Let’s not do talking stuff today at all, and I can have more food then. Yeah, that’s a better idea."*

Anybody besides me think that sounds a lot like something MitD would say?

Hmmmmm…

Freaks.

Oh.

You, um, weren’t asking me.

Never mind.

I don’t think Nale COULD intentionally act dumb. He want’s so badly to show off how smart and superior he is and be admired for it that it would just be unthinkable even to let someone thinks he’s an imbecile. Much less cause them to think it.

I have trouble remembering plot points, so I’m a little confused here. Is Elan lying (why?), or was there another explosion involving Nale that I don’t remember?

If the quote is

then I propose the original source to be the movie Freaks released in 1932.

I suppose Mr. Berlew will make more money if we buy from his site rather than through Amazon.

So…did the Minister know he wasn’t Nale the whole time?

I don’t think so.
He acted as if Elan knew him already (which would have been true if Elan were Nale).

He’s just bluffing, then? Interesting.

Well, as far as Elan knows, Nale was involved in this explosion, but he’s not aware that the remaining members of the Linear Guild made their escape four strips realier.

Oh, whoops. Totally misread the speech bubbles there. Thought it was the Minister who brought up Nale being killed in an explosion.

The other way makes a lot more sense.

Oh, OK. Your confusion was confusing me.
Now I understand.

There ARE a lot of dialogue bubbles out there. I have had to reread several of the strips to figure out what the heck is going on.
This is, of course, a good thing since it gives the whole thing a certain depth lacking in other pale imitations.

new OOtS. Plan A implemented…

“At last, we implement our most historically-successful stratagem.”

So he’s half dragon/half ogre. Interesting combination. And the best way to convince him of something is to use a graph. I really liked the graph.

“That’s not as reassuring as you might have imagined.”
