Order of the Stick - Book 5 Discussion Thread

Hey, he stole my dinner idea!

I love the chart.

Malack’s calling the Empress a “bloated idiot” under stress seems to confirm Haley’s theory that he’s the power behind the throne.

Variable-speed corn muffins indeed!

I may start considering the yummy/pointy ratio in future decision making.

So, any suggestion as how would one go about baking a batch of variable-speed corn muffins…?

I have been thinking about it, but I stumble upon the fact that gears and transmission trains tend to be hard on the teeth.

*High speed *corn muffins would be made with refined white flour and lots of oil.

*Low speed *corn muffins would be made with whole-grain flour, lots of bran, and apple sauce for liquid.

I am also unsure how to make variable speed corn muffins. At what point in the process can you change the speed?

Do the muffins themselves each have to be variable speed, or can just the recipe be that way? Or perhaps he was talking about using the muffins as projectiles?

Maybe there is a variety of corn muffins that causes the imbiber to increase their movement speed, and this movement mod is variable.

What?
Why are y’all looking at me like that?

I liked the chart way too much, since today is Monday and we had our dreaded Weekly Engineering Meeting today which included a few rather curious charts involving risk/rewards.

I don’t seem to remember ‘yummy’ and ‘pointy’ being two of the axis variables, but I was sort of not paying attention.

Interesting to see that they’re willing to take the damage from a Blade Barrier. 15d6. Ouch, although Haley and Elan will probably Save; I doubt V gets a saving throw as he’s paralysed (OTOH his familiar isn’t paralysed, so maybe he does).

Well, the argument could be made that V should share in the save of the people that are carrying hir. And I think the familiar has to be nearby in order to help the magic user’s save.

Haley and the familiar both have Evasion (or Improved Evasion) so they’re fine. Elan’s also got a good Reflex save, so he’ll be mostly fine. V gets a save, but with 0 dex and a low base Reflex save, they’ll probably fail.

Woo! Start of Darkness back in stock after a 3rd print! That and Origin of Pc’s on way to me. Come to me unread OotSy goodness.

“Start of Darkness” is an EXCELLENT comic.

Word of advice: If you read “Start of Darkness” first, and later on “On the Origin of PC’s”, the latter is practically sure to disappoint you a little.

“On the Origin of PC’s” is a nice work, but it was the first non-compilation book written by Mr. Burlew, and it shows a little. It is also much more “episodic” and thematically related to the early “gag-a-day” style of the comic.

“Start of Darkness” is wonderfully epic, deep, poignant, and -in a word- amazing. “On the Origin of PC’s” pales in comparison with it.

So, if I were you, I would read “On the Origin of PC’s” first, and then “Start of Darkness”.

Just my 2 eurocent!

The difference (to sum up a thread on this topic from the OOTS forum) is that OotPC is funnier and SoD is important to the plot*.

That being said, the scene in Origin where Roy stands down V is worth the price of the book alone.

*YMMV, of course. But that was the consensus.

Have they really run away all that often?

Once during the original dungeon crawl, they ran from goblins. And arguably, they ran away after the fall of Azure City, although participating fully in the defense of the city doesn’t capture the true spirit of “running away”.

When else have they fled enemies?

We started following them at just about the point in their careers when things other than running away were becoming viable options. They don’t do it as often any more. And don’t think of the entire Battle of Azure City; think on a more tactical level, running away from individual groups of goblins in the battle, or from the Monster in the Darkness.

And agreed that 15d6 damage should be no laughing matter for Vaarsuvius. E’s about 15th level emself, and es Con score probably isn’t all that great (being both an elf and a proud mage that disdains everything physical). I don’t think e’s even eligible for a save on es own, with no Strength score, and even if e uses Haley’s save, e’s still probably going to lose over half es HP.

Also, it’d make more sense for Elan to carry V, not Haley. Haley would normally have Evasion, and thus most likely take no damage, but that only applies when she’s lightly encumbered (and she almost certainly doesn’t have the strength to be lightly-encumbered while carrying a Medium-sized humanoid). Elan, of course, would also be encumbered, but he doesn’t have any relevant class features he’d lose by virtue of that. And with nothing but bard spellcasting to recover HP until they manage to meet back up with the others, they really want to minimize the total damage the three of them take.

Well, there was the tribe of orcs who wanted to worship Banjo.

New one.

So who’s beneath the General’s mask? I bet it’s someone we know.

Really? I can’t think of anyone we know who has (or at least maintains the pretext of) a strong code of honor, can think fast on his feet, and who would be serving as general for an evil empire.

I have my suspicions.
