Order of the Stick - Book 5 Discussion Thread

Looking at the strip from when she was bluffing their way in, ALL of her speech balloons are tinted, even when she makes an obviously true statement. So it’s ambiguous whether she’s telling the truth to Elan.

I think it probably does only work on lies, though, or she would have told her dad to trust Elan. But then again, the first time we see her using the Bluff skill, she doesn’t actually tell any lies, either. So I’m not sure.

Remember, only the last thing she says to Ian is powered by Glibness. Everything else was inside the Anti-Magic Field.

I interpret what Haley said to Elan as meaning that the Glibness only ups the believability of lies; the truth stands on its own merits.

And wow, poignant farewell between Haley and Ian there. He’s clearly happy and reassured, but she must feel terribly alone. Being a parent is rough stuff – you do the best you can with who you are and what you know at the time, but your own limitations mean that you’re almost inevitably installing the next generation’s need for therapy.

I think she’d be a lot more alone if she didn’t have Elan and Roy - the first to love her unconditionally and give her someone to look after, and the second to serve as the big brother she never had.

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.

That was awesome! Thanks!

wiping a tear That was beautiful, man.

So how does an anti-magic field work? It is generated by an artifact? Do the spells need refreshing often? Seems to me that a portable anti-magic field would be very useful for a party of adventurers. Especially, say, if they were going up against a powerful Lich.

Could a Lich even survive in an anti-magic field? Seems to me that something that’s essentially an animated pile of bones wouldn’t last long if the magic goes away.

You either find a naturally-occurring zone of antimagic and build your prison there, or you use the rules for magical architecture in The Stronghold Builder’s Guide. It’s not easy to make a permanent portable one.

Corporeal undead can exist and retain their mundane functions (walking around, hitting people with physical objects, etc.) in an antimagic field, but (like anyone) can’t use spells or spell-like or supernatural abilities. This would certainly inconvenience Xykon, but being epic, he’s sure to have some workarounds available to him. As long as the Order has time to prepare for their final showdown, it’s quite likely that Vaarsuvius will have a temporary AMF cast at the time.

775 is up.

And there’s the green-haired elf, still glaring away at V. Innnnnteresting…

My sanity demands that I do not engage that statement.

“Up With Beings”

Bad Year, heh.

Is it my imagination or does the palace in the background look an awful lot like the one in Disney’s Aladdin? Are they both based on something else?

It’s more than a little reminiscent of the Al Abbas Mosque.

Bah. If he’d ever stood in an amphitheatre, he’d know that you don’t need a microphone: as long as the crowd is quiet, the acoustics are such that you just need to project your voice.

It looked to me like the green-haired girl was glaring at the cat.

I’ve said this before but I’m guessing Vaarsuvius’ act of genocide has become known to the wider world.

Upon further searching, the green haired elf is the elven abbassador named Polozius, introduced here. Noted by V’s raven to be hostile to V here.
