Yeah, but the punchline was terrible. Doesn’t parse well when spoken, no way you’d confuse the two and doesn’t even make sense for Vampire-Durkon since Thor apparently does know that Hel has one of his high level clerics and has entered the Northern Lands. I get that Burlow was going for an “Eats shoots and leaves” thing here but it was a definite fumble.
I know, nearly a thousand strips and can’t all be winners. Just giving my opinion on this one.
I figure we better get used to slower pace, as I think it’s been more typical of Oots than not. The previous year sure was a wild ride though.
One aspect was clarified for me. Back in 948 Durkevil said, “The sooner I absorb all your memories, the sooner I can stop talking to you. Usually the process takes a few months, but it’s not a problem if you want to start your eternal dormancy early.”
I interpreted that as meaning that Durkon would be put into a permanent sleep. But this strip has Durkevil saying they are stuck with each other. I guess that could refer purely to the present tense, but it could also mean that Durkevil could just ignore Durkon in a year or so, rather than suffer constant aggravation.
Jeez, Oots vampires really are unnatural and horrific abominations aren’t they? This interpretation also makes the traditional depiction of vampirific ennui more persuasive. Being verbally abused by your body’s former host might get to be a drag after a couple of hundred years. Far better to be a diplomat like Malack. Yes, yes, we discussed earlier about whether Durkevil was sui generis: I guess no.
Sadly, 12 decent strips per year are more than most cartoonists can manage IMHO. Then again 90% of everything… could be better.
I suspect big climactic scenes are more fun write and draw than the set-up and exposition strips, hence the slower rate right now versus the end of the last book.
That’s… quite the retcon, isn’t it ? I realize those are memories of looong ago, back before the Order existed, but still I don’t really recall Durkon ever making a point to ask before helping anyone ?
When Roy met Durkon (Origin of PCs), Durkon was ‘adventuring’ with a party that sent him on suicide missions because they didn’t like him. Durkon went along because he had been sent (exiled) to be with the humans and figured all humans were jerks anyway so it didn’t matter which jerks he was with – he’d just go along until he got killed. Roy treated him well and defended him so Durkon decided to join up with Roy.
I’m guessing the frog was their first major encounter together. Durkon is nervous about hurting his new (and sole) friendship by acting out of turn and tripping Roy up. He obviously wants to help which is why he’s asking but he doesn’t want Roy to react as his mother did but with Roy leaving rather than his mother’s gentle lesson.
