Order of the Stick - Book 6 Discussion Thread

I don’t get it either.

It went over my head the first time I read it, too. Then I remembered a couple of details, and the penny dropped.

Pretend you’re Sigmund Freud reading that panel.

“Back me up, B.”

Nope… still not gettin’ it.

Or, given what we’ve seen of Greysky City, reanimated. Haley might end up fighting FrankenCrystal.

One last clue.

Wait… is the joke that Haley might pleasure herself with a spell wand?

Umm… I don’t think a woman would pleasure herself with a spell wand any more than she would a revolver.

Do you guys seriously look at a bunch of carrots and think “Ooooo yeah! I know where that’s going!” ?

Edit: Yup. You guys need help. I look at a hammer, and I see a hammer. You guys see a penis. Seriously.

Also that B ‘never saw the need for one’…

Not with a spell wand, no. But with Elan’s “wand”, sure. “For that magical trick you just can’t duplicate.”

You don’t think magic could duplicate a sex toy or penis?

Some modified spell… let’s call it “Bigby’s erotic Fingers”, for example?

Hitachi makes one of the most popular wands of all time.

No, the joke is that wands are vaguely phallic-shaped, and the other character is a lesbian, and therefore, not interested in phalluses in general.

I don’t think that’s the implication people are drawing from this strip.

Also, it depends on what spells you have stored in the wand. I’m sure Bigby developed a spell or two that would work great in that situation.

So…phallic implications aside, how do wands work in D&D? Is it “Use X times and then throw away” or “Use X times/day”? Because it seems kind of wasteful to have Haley practicing with wands if each try consumes a charge from a very expensive consumable.

OK, that was subtle. But I got it on the re-read.

EDIT: Wands are limited-use, but each one starts with 50 charges (though the secondhand ones scavenged from Z might have less). Realistically, there’s no chance in running through all of the charges in even one of the wands before they finish saving the world. And from Haley’s point of view, the process for activation one is the same for every wand, so she can spread her practice out over multiple wands.

What I think isn’t important. Haley obviously feels there’s no substitute for the real thing - and as I understand it, a fair few women actually think that a flesh and blood penis attached to a man they’re really into beats any three sex toys you care to name.

A man with your advantages might have read Girls with Slingshots, drawn by a woman who bangs on a great deal about phallic objects if only they don’t have to be part of an actual man.

Not that literally. The joke is that the straight woman is saying how much she likes wands and the gay woman is saying she’s never really had any use for them.

I’m somewhat baffled that it took so much effort to explain that joke…

I, too. Is this typical on these boards?

I think it depends how often people reread the comic. I didn’t remember that the other person was a known lesbian. So I didn’t see that aspect of the joke but got the rest of it.

I don’t remember any support for Bandana being a lesbian in previous strips. What did I miss?

ETA: oh, nm – the comment about her ex being curvy like Haley, when they were discussing armor. Got it.
