Other Faires besides MD

We all know about who’s going to the Maryland Ren Faire but how about other shires?

In California, Northern Faire is about to start (Opening day is next Saturday - Sept 6) and runs through October 19.

I’ll be there just about every weekend. I’ve been going to Faire for some years, but this is my first as a full-on participant.

We started building about three weeks ago, and in that time, I’ve learned:

It takes a few doses of Malathion before the fleas, spiders and mosquitos are beaten back to an acceptable level that won’t carry off small children. (Meanwhile, those spider bites HURT for two days, then they ITCH!)

Burlap that’s been in storage for ten months stinks.

The markings on the various parts of the buildings will have rubbed off so you can’t tell if this wall section is for the Buttery or the Keep.

Dragon Piss (Gatorade) is your friend.

Sheetrock and deck screws can be made period by painting them brown.

The water truck will come along and make a mess of whatever you put up ten minutes ago. What’s worse? Dust? Or mud splashed to a height of three feet?

Half of the Faire folk are fueled by tankards of ale. The other half take nips of rum/brandy/etc from their flask.

Everyone’s having fun despite the heat and bugs.

We are having another Faire here in Brunswick, maine. We don’t have to worry about drunk characters here because my whole mideval group (minus a select few) are minors. Oh well, any way, it’s on October 14th at 6pm. Aj out

We don’t seem to have a problem with drunks, per se, but rather, people are perhaps a touch happier than usual.

Actually, anyone that’s drinking beer/ale/hard stuff during the day when it’s sunny and warm if not altogether stinking hot, is a moron and deserves to fall ill.

A rule of thumb I saw elsewhere calls for drinking two additional volumes of water for every volume of beer or caffeinated beverage to make up for what the alcohol or caffeine takes out.

Pennsylvania Ren Faire - Mount Hope Winery - Lancaster, PA, starts Labor Day Weekend runs until the end of October.

Yeah, Pennsylvania is pretty sweet.

There used to be one just east of Fredericksburg, VA, but the property was on the market when we left three years ago. I never went, but my husband did once and he said it was overpriced and none too impressive.

I’ve never been to one, myself.

Dragon Piss? LMAO I like it, I must not be a true Renfester. I don’t know all the “in fest” lingo. I’ve been to the AZ RenFest about 7 times and never heard of it. Don’t ray gun me, please. I’ll go more, I SWEAR!! I SWEAR!!

Faire lingo? Here’s some followed by an all-purpose insult generator. (A pox on thee, thou hedge-born ale-knight!)

A comical look at how to tell when you need to go home and return to the 21st century.

Perhaps if, like me, you have an offline verison of this that has 210 items, you’ve really had too much Faire.

One of my favorites:
The first thing you do when you get home is shower… the second thing you do is get undressed.

How to speak the speak

In July, I went to the Renfest in Larkspur, Colorado. It runs all summer and has been there for 20+ years. I’d never been to one but I really enjoyed this.

Every fall, in October and early November, there’s a Texas Renaissance Festival near Navasota. It’s a reasonable drive from Houston or Austin, and not a terrible drive from San Antonio, Dallas or Fort Worth. It’s pretty neat, and has it’s own dedicated land to run on - it’s a large fair. We’ve been several times, and I’ve always enjoyed it. Here’s their web page:
