Our best winter photographs

While we are experiencing a very cold winter in many places, it can give rise to some interesting shots for the amateur photographers amongst us. Why not share a few?

I took this one about a week ago, when a cold mist over the frozen lake created a really romantic though ghostly atmosphere:

If you’re interested, this is the skyline of the Dutch town where I live, Almere (reclaimed from the sea about 40 years ago, and now the fastest growing big city of the Netherlands).

Winter & Christmas

My brother’s truck in a recent snowstorm.

I posted this in another thread last month, but I like it enough that I want to show it again :).

Snow Bird

I’m a terrible picture taker – but I’m trying!

Taken on a snowshoe last weekend. Vermilion Peak

This is from last year, but I had to post it again. The Giant Snow Blower.

I’ll play.

I splurged on a new lens just before Christmas, and was duly rewarded when I went up to the Lake District over the holidays.

I’ve rarely enjoyed a morning’s photography more; on my face in the frost over a frozen pond. When I finally stood up, I couldn’t feel my knees, but it was entirely worth it.

And this one is from last year:

Those pictures in the Lake District are stunning.

Wow nice pics guys!

I love taking shot of the farm, here are a few from last year.

After a big blizzard.

Hoarfrost

Hayrake

Beautiful macros, Devorin. Mind if I ask what lens you were using?

I’ve been a homebody a lot this winter, so I haven’t taken as many photos as I’d like (though I do like this little dyptich I used as last week’s self-portrait for 52 Weeks, which has a wintery sort of theme to it)

Sooo… instead, here are a few of my older favourites:
Frozen Bubbles
Icy Dock
Frosty Pines

That is gorgeous. It should be on a holiday greeting card.

The frosty pines is very nice, I like that one.

The lens was a Canon 100mm F/2.8 macro lens, attached to an EOS 350D. That lens is a blooming miracle; really, really sharp and crisp. Being able to get really close to subjects has been a revelation in the way I see them - every last little detail is suddenly sharp. Joy! I intend to spend a lot more time over the summer taking macros; I’m looking forward to this.

Thanks, Shirly! If you’d like to see more pictures of the Lakes, from various times of the year, I have lots more pictures:

Lots of repeats there, and some of those galleries are more carefully screened than others. All SFW, I hasten to add - it’s just that some awful shots got uploaded when I wasn’t too careful with getting rid of them.

Awesome photos. Beautiful area.

Great shots, thanks for sharing.

A glowing morning shot with ice I took yesterday:

That is a beautiful shot. What kind of camera do you have?

There’s a lot of great shots in this thread.

My favorite one so far this winter at Harriman State Park in NY.

My favorite one from last year also in Harriman State Park.

Gosh, there are some gorgeous pictures in this thread. Keep 'em coming, folks!

Thank you for the compliments, CAT and SaharaTea.

My camera is a Nikon D40, I was using my 50-200mm lens during a brief bright break in snowstorms a few days before xmas. We don’t usually get that kind of snow around here!

Here are a few quickies from last winter:

Lots of great photos here!

I tried to take some early this morning with the mists coming off the pond. There were a few little ducks swimming around and I caught one fellow with the sun behind him. It’s not all that great, but gives me an idea for doing it better:

I got nuttin’. You wouldn’t be able to tell my winter shots from my summer shots. But I am so enjoying all of your photos!

Well, this winter shot of mine is turning out to be my second-most faved pic so far at Flickr. It is also the first to hit the top 50 of Flickr Explorer (the best shots of the day). And I am actually a bit proud of it.
