Ow. Ow. OW!!

As do I, but fortunately I’ve found a deodorant that causes no problems for me. I’m a Brut man now.

dantheman You have my sympathy. Afew months ago I became allergic to tide. My laundry had been using it for about 6 months or so without any problems then all of a sudden I was itchy rashy and icky all over. Unfortunately even my personal parts were affected(yes even there!).
Hydrocortizone cream works the best for both healing ickyness and itchyness. For some reason a product can be used for quite somtime before you develop any type of reaction. Hope you feel better soon.

dantheman, my husband went through the same thing.

at first he just mentioned in passing that he had some sort of rash on his side. since we have horses and handle bales of hay (which occasionally have less-than-desirable extra ingredients), we thought he’d probably gotten some contact with poison ivy (which he is much more sensitive to than i).

but after a while, the patch got BIG. and ugly. and… oozy.

we finally figured that it must be a reaction to his deodorant. so i quit getting the Old Spice products for him, and it cleared up after a while.

but then it came back. he quickly switched to some of my “gender-neutral” stuff, and it healed again. we finally figured out (by process of elimination) that it was a specific formulation that triggered the problems, rather than a particular brand. as long as i didn’t buy him any of the “no white streaks” formula, there’s no rash.

it’s easy to eliminate these, since they are generally the blue-colored sticks, as opposed to the old-fashioned white stick type. must be something in that chemical combo that is just too harsh for him. they don’t bother me at all.

and i’ll add my vote for the hydrocortizone and aloe vera recommends.

Prolonging it? Pretty much, yeah. The back of most deodorants say to stop using the product until the rash clears. If you just can’t not use deodorant for some reason, at least skip a day to give your skin a break. You might also want to see a dermatologist, which of course, I am not.

I guess I’m pretty sensitive, but Coast or any type of deodorant soap gives me a rash. And, as you’ve discovered, just because it didn’t cause a problem in the past doesn’t mean it isn’t causing one now. I’d skip it for the time being. I like Ivory, as I said before, or Jergens makes a “Pure & Natural” line with no dyes, fragrances or deodorants. You may also want to change your laundry detergent for a little while.

Also, since you’ve developed a sensitivity to something in deodorants, you may find you become hyper-sensitive to all deodorants. Fun, huh? We can just be smelly together.

Well, I didnt’ say I was using the same deodorant! Sheesh, give me some credit. I stopped using the Axe and switched to something else. (I had never used this type of Axe before, either.)

I have very sensitive skin, and am allergic to almost EVERYTHING. I use one of those french crystal deoderant stones. Works well for me, and is very gentle. If you can’t find a commercial product that doesn’t irritate your skin, you might try that. Soap-wise, I use glycerin soap…years ago I tried Zest, and I ended up looking like I had the measles. And the itching…GAH!!! Got some Ivory, and I don’t know if it was because my skin was already all fired up, but the rash didn’t go away. The glycerin soap saved my sanity. [sub]such as it is…[/sub]

And…you have my sympathy. Skin rashes are miserable.

::huggles::

I finally got off my fat ass and bought hydrocortisone, baby powder, and an oatmeal bath. Thank you all very much for the laundry list of things to buy!

I showered to get the soap and calamine off. Now I’m eating some very-bad-for-me fast food, because I’m too tired and weak to make dinner.

This is definitely one of those times when I wish I didn’t live alone. I don’t mean someone to make dinner, I mean someone to walk the dog!

I use Mitchum, but only in the armpits.

Why on earth are you swiping deoderant on your chest, stomach, and the back of your neck? Contrary to your OP, those are most definitely not “deoderant areas.” Who raised you, french people?

The only possible reason you could have for doing that is to get the perfume component onto those areas. Try cologne instead.

I’ve never had a need for cologne, either.

Believe it or not, the bottle itself says “spray it on your underarms, chest, neck - all the hot spots.” I was using as directed.

I got the same thing once and it was nasty. Suffice it to say, I could now be the “Toms of Maine” posterboy. I started using their deodorant and it cleared right up. Wonderful stuff! It is a natural deodorant that uses sage extract and lemongrass oil for it’s odor control (at least in one of it’s man-scents, woodspice). I’ve also tried the unscented kind too. Works great, non-allergenic, aluminum free, give it a try. I swear by it. It’s tomsofmain dot com and complete ingredients listings can be found there too.

deodorant containing aluminum + open sores = Bad. In fact I’ve seen some deodorant containers say something to the affect of, “Do not use if there are open sores”.

Get better.

Seriously? Holy crap.

Every can/stick/bottle I’ve ever used said “for underarm use only.” And what does “hot spots” mean, anyway.

“Make sure the back of your neck doesn’t stink.”

We’ve entered a whole new marketing arena.

Actually, when you get a little bit of a paunch (!), that’s an area where sweat collects. So it does make sense to spray a little there. You don’t just exude from the armpits - you spray there because it can collect there rather easily.

The neck, I dunno.

That reads like a million dollar lawsuit material :stuck_out_tongue:

Ick.

Maybe I should try deoderant on my feet. Boy howdy, could they use it.

Update:

Much better today. Before I went to bed last night I applied the hydrocortisone and then put baby powder on top of that. Didn’t add any soap or deodorant.

And it didn’t hurt as much today. I put more on after I showered, and it seems to be helping.

I’m grateful to everyone in this thread for offering their advice. See, this is a problem when you live alone. You have no one to bounce ideas off of.

Might be worth getting just in case … er …

Wait, nevermind. That’s Oh. Oh. OH!!, not OW. Ow. OW!!

I am bumping this because I wanted to see how dantheman was doing. How’s things, Dan?

Ex, you may not pee right, but you are one funny dude.

Also, this newfangled Axe stuff isn’t your traditional deodorant/antiperspirant – they call it a “body spray” and it’s sort of a combo deodorant/cologne. You must not watch much tv if you’ve managed to avoid all the adverts for it.

Well, I’m sort of okay. Thanks for asking, Wintermute.

I’ve gone through two 1-oz. tubes of the hydrocortisone. The rash is a lot better, but sadly my will not to scratch falls flat, and scratcheth I musteth.

Meaning that for every two steps of progress, I take one of regress. But I digress.

I can function fine, but sleep last night was a major issue, as I had run out of the hydro. Could not sleep. Sitting or lying still made me itch. I even went back to the calamine, and even that didn’t help. I eventually took a shower and put on nice fresh clothes, and somehow that helped. Methinks it was more psychological discomfort than anything else.

Anyway, I got more hydro today, and I’ll apply it tonight. It’ll be fine soon.

Glad to hear you’re doing better. And I know what you mean about the scratching; sometimes you just gotta.
