Yeah, I was going to say “Get thee to the anti-histamine aisle of your drug store!!!” This will stop the itching, so you don’t scratch, so it will get the chance to heal. Lay off the vaseline, the skin needs air to heal. Avoid heat, like hot showers too, this irritates the skin more, and makes it more itchy. Calamine might work, so might soaking in a slightly warm bath with Aveeno.
Also, maybe go to an herbal type shop and buy Thursday Plantation Tea Tree soap. Tea tree oil speeds healing, and is used for treating psoraisis, and eczema it is excellent for skin. (It also numbs pain, and has anti-micorbial properties.) Only that brand, or failing that one that has the Kangaroo seal from Australia.
Only buy tea tree products from Australia, because the other countries that make it may not process it correctly, which is important. Also, test a small spot on your wrist to make sure it’s not too potent/harsh for your skin. Some people with delicate skin get irritated skin from it.
Hie thee hence!
Good Luck ((dantheman)) Having a rash is no fun. Hope it heals quickly.
 Hope it heals quickly.
I may wind up going to the doctor. I need to find one first, though - haven’t picked out a new one since I moved…
Hey, dantheman, I’m a veteran of rashes. If you’re using that much hydrocortisone cream, go to the dr. It’s over a large enough area, and may be annoying enough that you’ll get an oral steroid which will knock it out tres fast. Them things are serious medicine, prescription only, but when you’ve got the rash, the itching and the no sleeping from it, sometimes they’re heaven. IANAD, though, so I’m just saying think about going to one before you spend another itching, painful night.
And I feel for you!
Steroids? Oh, boy! Will they make me big and strong? Oh, boy!
Yeah, prednisone (steroid) was always pretty helpful in controlling my poison oak, which I am hysterically allergic to.
Big & Strong? Nope. You’re thinking of anabolic steroids. They’re different from things like prednisone. I asked that same question, too, the first time I had to take them.
However regular oral steroids can make you hungry & retain water, so maybe you will get big…just not strong & just not big in the way you want. Plus, if the dr. prescribes what’s called a burst (short course starting with high amount of mgs per day quickly reduced to low mgs/day then you’re done), you’ll probably feel like Superman for a day or two. The side-effects, including the Superman effect, are temporary.
I always crave tomato & mustard sammiches when I’m on the 'roids. Don’t know why.
Until you get to the doc’s, Benadryl should also help you sleep. Diphenhydramine - the active ingredient in Benadryl - is also the active ingredient in most over-the-counter sleeping pills.
I should go get the Benedryl. I waited until I got home to call the doctor, and they closed about 8 minutes before I called. I’ll have to call first thing in the morning.
It was pretty bad today, very uncomfortable. This has gone on much longer than it ought to have.
Dang. You still have this?
Yeah, definitely contact your doctor tomorrow morning. Most people just think of skin rashes as annoying inconveniences, but they can turn into serious medical issues double-quick. Ever heard of cellulitis? It’s no fun at all. If your doctor refers you to a dermatologist, go. I’m not kidding.
I’m sorry if my earlier posts in this thread came off as irritating or obnoxious. I was just joking around in MPSIMS, and I didn’t mean any harm.
In that vein, I have a question:
Huh?
I hope you got some anti-histamine in you. Also, try putting a full set of clean bedding on your bed, and maybe set up a fan to gently blow across you.
Hope you get better soon.
I went through a summer with a bad rash on both legs due to mosquito, flea bites, and heat. It was no fun. I had to resort to soaking in a bath infused with a STRONG decocotion of chamomile! (Decoction in this case=dried flower heads brewed in a ceramic coated pot for hours, must be glass or ceramic, if you use metal you don’t get “all the good” from the herbs.) I’d lie in the water for an hour or two savoring the relief. Blush I’m a dark brunette, but it started to turn me blonde “down there”. (Chamomile is good for giving golden highlights. lol) I went to the doctor, all they told me was to use over the counter stuff and to stop scratching in my sleep.
Anyway, now those Dopers who might have a similar problem this summer have a last minute resort.
Nah, no worries, Exgineer. This being MPSIMS, I assume everyone’s light of heart here.
I might miss work tomorrow. No big whup.
Cool.
I’ll second all the posters who said “oatmeal bath.” Short term, that’s the only way to go.
To get back into my world:
GEEZE, YOU IDIOT! WHAT IN THE NAME OF GOD WERE YOU THINKING, SPRAYING SOME CRAP YOU SAW ADVERTIZED ON TELEVISION ALL OVER YOURSELF WITHOUT TESTING IT FIRST! WHAT A MORON!!! I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS!
Ask me how I almost chopped my own foot off on a camping trip sometime.
Yeah… but I’ve been using this brand for well over a year…
Fine.
I’ll shut up and go away now.

 right back.
 right back.

If you want bland-but-slightly-funny reading material while you’re laid up, you should go to welby’s authorized imitation Rue MMP thread.
It’s kinda-sorta almost as good as the real thing.
<shameless plug>
And just to piss you off further, I should mention that I have never, ever had a rash since I got out of diapers.
And I didn’t have many of those diaper-rash thingys either, because my Mommy was diligent. That was before the advent of Pampers[sup]TM[/sup], too.
Yeah, I’ve never had one before… never had an allergic reaction, either. No allergies, no nothing. Well, at least I got a nap in earlier to make up for all the lost sleep last night.
Dan Sorry I’m so late to this thread…
Go to your kitchen cabinet and get some powdered (Argo) corn starch, use that instead of baby powder or creams or all that other crap. It works wonders to keep you dry and soothes the itch. Take a couple of Benadryl whenever you catch yourself scratching. That should do it.
AND quit spraying aerosol on your skin.
I heard about the corn starch today. I don’t have any… but I’m going to make an appointment and do what the doctor says. Enough with these home remedies.
