I blame Mercator.
Next, you’re going to try telling me Greenland isn’t bigger than Africa.
But with like one eight the population it’s WAY emptier.
I hope she told them “His problem is that he’s an orphan.”

One of the sailors on my first ship was convinced Greenland is bigger than Africa because of how it looked on a Mercator projection map. The scary thing is this particular sailor was a Quartermaster. Those are the enlisted folks responsible for navigation.

That’s actually probably fine. The reason a Mercator projection is so wonky is that it preserves the angles between latitude and longitude lines. So if he takes the map too literally, he should at least have the correct heading down.
A fun gif via wikipedia:
That’s pretty cool. Have you seen this one?

What’s weird to me is haven’t any of these people looked at a friggin globe where the relative sizes are correct? I understand the Mercator projection distorts things a lot as you get closer to the poles, but, growing up, we had plenty of globe experience in second grade to realize the flat maps aren’t good for comparing relative size of countries.
That motion is disconcerting.
Only here, man, does a decapitation lead to discussions of Mercator projections.

This post gave me a thought, and of course, it already exists on the internet:
Came here for a beheading; got a real-estate seminar.
A small and irrelevant question in the story-why do they list the price of the person’s home?
I think they just include any detail that’s available to them when they have nothing else to add.
That was my thought too. You get a name and an address of a guy from the police, and that’s all. Only info they can get from that point is to search the county’s public property records. Excellent, print the home value, it fills up space. Now we have a more substantial story to go along with our CRAAAAAAZY headline.
Assuming (quite hopefully) that Dad was Victim #1.
It would be a most unpleasant revelation if that were not the case.
It’s only been a day. You might inspect the basement, crawlspace, and attic by now, but digging up the backyard is gonna take some time.
And who knows how many storage units he’s got?
I used to think Canada was enormous compared to the US but I just looked it up, and it’s about 6% bigger in total land area.
Fact: Canada owns more of the US than any other country (my second Canadian Bacon reference of the week!).

But with like one eight the population it’s WAY emptier.
And yet 90% of them are massed along the US-Canada border, poised to invade.
(That’s three!)
I couldn’t tell you what grades this happened in, but I do know we were taught many times, that the Mercator comparative sizes were not accurate. I can’t believe someone who has graduated high school in the US would not know that.
Josh Marshall: “A bit disturbing to me that NBC fails to note the killer’s screed about the “Biden regime”, “army of illegal immigrants”, BLM, and call for “revolution”. Seems like there may have been a political dimension to this. (in the article but buried).”
Oliver Willis: “if a biden supporter beheaded someone and said his opposition to maga was the motivation, it would be mentioned every 10 minutes on fox and the msm would be all over it. but the opposite has happened, and…”
How quaint all of us geezers are getting in our old age. Next, we’ll be confusing the youth by talking about phones connected to land lines. First google result of “how common are classroom globes.”

I K R? I mean, when Dopers derail a thread, we derail the fuck outta the conversation.
But hey, informative facts were shared.
We now return you to the original conversation about globes the amount of land in Canada some dude’s head in a bag.
