[After a small plane crashes on the second floor of a home he is checking with his wife]
Garp : We’ll take the house. Honey, the chances of another plane hitting this house are astronomical. It’s been pre-disastered. We’re going to be safe here!
I can confirm that: I have tried recently to buy a nice globe, bigger than 40 cm diameter. Not even on amazon! Still looking around, but I have the feeeling I will end up buying a historical artifact.
I believe more the former than the latter, but yeah, actually both. Just what I believe, no cite, sorry.
Nah, if you fear you’re going to be attacked, you back up a little bit. This lets you clear space for visibility then fill it with passive and active defenses, like walls, mines, and launched explodey bits. Not just mow a 10 foot wide strip between the evergreens.
Don’t do that. My brother and I pulled out our childhood globe to show his children but realized it was hopelessly out of date with regard to national borders. (The former Soviet Union most obviously but lots of smaller differences all over the place.) So we bought a new one for them. Perhaps the lesson is to get a globe that doesn’t show national borders?
When I was a kid I had a globe that showed the world without the borders in more or less natural colours (yellow for the Sahara, green for the Amazon, white for the poles etc. And when you switched the lamp that was inside on it showed the borders of countries in different colours! I liked that!
You bought a new one recently? May I ask how big?
Within the anecdote given, the person would have been around when classroom globes were common, I’d imagine. At any rate, we now have Google Earth to disabuse us of the notion that Greenland is some sort of continent-sized island.
Yes, that is what I was thinking about. Seriously. Can’t find them new, can’t find them old. This globe was inspired by a very similar one in the Reichskanzlei in Berlin (where Hitler governed and died), you can see it here in his office, on the left between the lamp on the desk and the window, if you magnify the image:
Rumor has it that some American soldier was last seen playing football with it along the corridors. Not sure that is true though. The Soviets were there first and they would not have left such an object intact.
Are you looking for a special type of globe? I can get one tomorrow on Amazon. Actually, I can get one delivered to my house within the next six hours on Amazon.
I found some globes on the US Amazon site and there’s an American company called Replogle that specializes in them. They have some relatively inexpensive ones and some really fancy display ones, including the big floor type.
They don’t seem to ship to Europe. Here there are only small ones on offer (last time I looked, a couple of weeks before Christmas). 40 cm (~ 16 inches) is a bit small.
