“[pant]OMG it’s hot out there[/pant]”
Now that you’re indoors, remove the pants and you’ll feel cooler.
They’re predicting 100 degrees for Thursday, it’s been several years since we hit triple digits here. Not much of a break the rest of the week either, mid to upper 90s. I can stand the heat, but the humidity is awful. It’s hard to breathe outside.
Was 106 F. here in Tucson today, but now it’s 91 and raining. We’re expected to have highs of around 100 all week, and some rain is predicted every day, so it’s a shade cooler than normal here. Normally it would be around 108 for a high, but with less humidity than there is now.
93 is a serious emergency? I wouldn’t have imagined that any amount of humidity would make 93 dangerous.
Around here, the highs have been between 100 and 108 since about June 25th, although it did strangely rain last night for about an hour or two. Lows are around 77-81
South Carolina.
I might as well be swimming in the swamp.
High 90’s in SE Missouri. Oppressive Humidity. I was in North Texas 10 and Western OK almost two weeks ago. Car thermometer reached 108 (I think it is pretty accurate). Humidity was lower than here in Missouri. I felt more comfortable in the 108 deg than the 98 degrees here. I don’t like the heat but in past job, my required me to be in 125-135 deg temperatures at times. with full safety gear, long sleeves, hard hats, respirator. Obviously no one can last too long like that, but you do become more acclimated to the hotter temperatures.
Minneapolis here;
89 degrees a short while ago, 77% Humidity. “Feels like 108” is what the Weather Channel said.
Walked outside earlier and my glasses instantly fogged. “Swimming in the air” weather. Hazy, overcast, extremely thick and humid. I do not handle heat well, so I’m pretty much house, store or car bound in this weather. Given that I’m pretty much poor, that means house bound.
It is only going to get worse. Highs in the 90’s for the rest of the week.
I think it is when it’s expected to go on for days. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the next 4 days saying that there’s “a heightened risk of heat related stress and injury” and calling it dangerous. Midwest heat and humidity can be really awful. As someone mentioned upthread people really do die, especially elderly people without air conditioning. If I didn’t have air conditioning in my 2nd floor apartment it would be like a hot car in the sun, not even cooling down overnight. As it is it’s still over 80 degrees despite my window unit.
Highs in the 90’s predicted for the rest of the week here in NJ. Yuck. I’m stocking my freezer with ice cube trays.
25 calories apiece means I can have 3-4 a day with no guilt in this heat.
Northwest Oregon, here. It rained all day, but now it’s finally stopped. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be low 80s. Then rain again on Tuesday. Then sunny and low 70s the rest of the week is the forecast.
It’s been gorgeous here lately upper 70s to mid 80’s. Unusually nice for this time of year. The couple of weeks before that were appropriately hot, high 90s to low 100s.
Yup, as Zjestika said - in places where we’re not prepared for the heat, and the heat and humidity get high, it’s brutal. We’re getting the same weather here in the UP, and it’s really, really bad. Most people don’t have AC - we only have it in our bedroom and my office. We spent the whole weekend going from the beach to restaurants with AC then back to the beach, and still ran out of stuff to do long before the main part of the house cooled off. I can’t imagine what we’d do if we didn’t have a big, cold lake right next to us. No matter how hot it gets, Lake Superior is cold, and you can always go jump in to get insta-cool.
I’m hip to the hot weather, especially seeing as June was mostly in the 50s and raining, but this is too much. And it’s supposed to keep up all week. Yuk. On the other hand, I think my kayaking skills will improve.
This is the flip side of when we northerners laugh at all the people in the south when they get 1" of snow and flip out. We can go snow up here just fine; heat brings us to our knees.
I moved to Maine in part to get away from the constant summer heat and humidity in Florida. And guess what? It’s hot and humid every frigging day here too! It isn’t that bad at night, but at the hottest point of the day it’s just as bad as FL sometimes.
Grumble grumble where’s fall when you need it?
We’re going for 33C/91F feeling like 39C/102F. Currently at 88% humidity, going towards 44%.
Hmmm, I’m the only one in the office right now. Maybe I should turn up the AC a bit. I’m sweating even at my desk. At home I have a portable AC unit. This whole ‘be prepared for -40C to 40C’ thing is really expensive.
I lightly sunburned through a long sleeved t-shirt.
OK - I was on the Harley and had my arms in one basic position for 7 hours but still it caught my attention.
We are one day away from breaking the all-time record for over-100 degree days in a single summer, which was 29 days, set in 1934. We’ll probably tie that record this week.
It’s also extremely dry. We usually have had at least 9 inches of rain by this time. This year, we’ve had 1.1 inches total. The last significant rainfall we’ve had was last 4th of July, more than a year ago.
Yeah, I’m in Dallas, TX. I … don’t think much more needs to be said.
Lawdy but ain’t it hawt? Climbing nicely into the mid 90’s in NYC today, tasty humidity. Nothing like New Orleans or Orlando right now, but goodness.
People skulking along the avenue, glaring at one another in the noonday sun. Barely suppressed twitches. Women trying to appear cool and unruffled- a difficult task when the beads of sweat appear as lonely journeymen along their brow and behind their ears and gather in small groups, meeting up with other small groups like pilgrims on the trail to Santiago de Compostela before forging ahead in small salty cadres down the inexorably interesting path between the bosom. The baking sun also brings out the testosterone and either men are twitchy and quick to posture or they force an exaggerated patina of manners and respect by way of avoiding explosive violence.
Here in Queens, the reverse is frequently the case as one finds men with salty pecs and women who are struggling not to kill each other.
Time to take down the plastic tub on top of the fridge that is usually filled with a mélange of insulated cups. Dump them. Fill tub half way with cool tap water, throw in a coupla freezer paks.
Few things cool the body more efficiently that running the blood through the feet which are sitting in cool water. Goodness but it does a mind and soul a world of happiness.
Might be money to be made, selling Foot Soaks™ to people sitting at the cafés out on the avenue. $ 10.00 for 10 minutes, guaranteed to cool you off and reduce the desire to either assassinate the people at the next table or salt your fries by rubbing them on your chest.
Ahh, the cool waters…
Meh! That is exactly the temperature in my office right now, 62% humidity according to the sensor right next to me. And we have a much longer summer.
But yes, the heat makes people a bit more prone to violence and/or laziness. We would kill each other, but it’s too damn much work.
