[pant]OMG it's hot out there[/pant]

I feel sorry for our Texas meteorologists in the summer months when all they can do is come out night after night and remind us that it’s hot, and it’s going to stay hot till Halloween.

Living here, I can’t complain about the heat. I’m an adult. I could always move somewhere with a more temperate climate, but I can’t imagine how you people up north are faring without central AC. Up thread Chimera mentioned the value of foot soaks, and I can’t agree more. When my AC went out last summer for 3 days, I spent my time at home in front of 2 fans with a mister full of cool water in my hand and my feet in a huge pot of cold water. It made it barely bearable.

Upstate NY, 100 degrees today, heat index of 112. I want to go to sleep but when I leave this room where there’s AC, it’s like wearing a bearskin rug in a sauna. I can’t handle heat. My ancestors lived in a land where they lived on turnips dug up from the frozen steppes. I get sunburn walking to the mailbox. 88 f’ing degrees at 11:30 p.m. - can I sleep with my feet in a bucket of ice water?? Usually I make do with my trusty little Vornado fan and fall into a narcoleptic stupor, but not tonight, I’ll have to camp out, up here…and what am I going to do with the cat? He doesn’t like closed doors and is in and out of here 20 times an hour. …Here is my heat tip. A home-made ‘Chillow’. Search out in the drugstore or grocery, near the grilling/picnic supplies, those blue quilted ice blanket things, about 9 x 18 inches, that you put in your picnic basket to keep stuff cold. Not the small one- piece things, these are bigger and flatter. The quilted squares are filled with liquid, you put them in the freezer. Well, put two in the freezer, take one out and wrap in a towel, and put it behind your back and lean against it, against a pillow or cushion. Instant relief! You can do the same with a freezer pack held against your front, or just switch them out. They stay frozen a good hour. If they made 3’ x 6’ sizes, I wouldn’t complain about the heat half so much!

Yesterday in Toronto it reached the fourth-hottest day on record, with a temperature of 37.5C. It felt like 48.

That’s almost Australian temperatures. So I went to the beach. And now I am very sunburned.

Friends are holding a tiki party tomorrow, digging out the bikini  ; it’s been above 90 for two weeks, hit 100 yesterday and is supposed to stay hot through Monday, when it chills down to a relatively polar 86 degrees.

Gah. It was too hot for me. I cowered indoors and hugged my air conditioner. :frowning:

For our American friends, 48C is 118 F.

I just had ceiling fans installed in the living room and bedroom on Wednesday. What perfect timing!

I had the AC on low and the fan on medium and my bedroom was just divine.

When I woke up and opened my bedroom door, the heat was like walking into a wall. Bleh!

Saw on the news this morning that it’s supposed to be 104 next Monday & Tuesday. That’s withOUT the heat index. Poor guy: meteorologists are always kinda excited when we’re gonna break whatever local weather record, but he was almost cringing. I forgot which record: consecutive 100+ days, maybe? Dunno. Too hot to care.

Oh, air-conditioning. How I wuvzes you.

Today was ‘only’ in the upper 90’s, which is supposedly an improvement over yesterday’s low 100’s. If yesterday we were standing at the very gates of hell, it’s not saying much if today we’re standing 5 feet away from the gates of hell.
