Hiya, I have completely failed to set aside the necessary time to play this game as it should have been played, for which I apologise. I suspect choie would have made a much better host than I did and I would love to hear her reads on the remaining unguessed guests - that’s certainly way better than letting it just fizzle out.

Since no one was guessing aside from me and Hardly, I’ll reveal mine then. And y’all should be embarrassed about not getting it, because…

[spoiler]My quirk was thinking/acting like the poster above me. Not their party quirk, but them. So I had to create freakin’ dossiers on all of you stinkers, looking through your profiles, your threads, your posts… That’s why my location, favorite films, and time on the SDMB kept changing, depending on whose post I was following.

So that’s why I…

• Complained to you, HardlySanguine, about sitting too close to me despite all the empty chairs nearby since you just had a pit thread about people who sat too close to you on trains despite there being empty chairs available! I couldn’t believe you didn’t get that one. (As if the references to hating the sound of toothbrushing and the “lurking in your backyard” of your location weren’t enough! And what about referencing some of your favorite words, e.g. Oxbow, Oribi, Zeatin, Unau and Muumuu all in the same post?!)

• Blathered on about making an awesome mac & cheese recipe, Starcraft, LOTR, my local PBS station KUSM (from out of Bozeman), having once been in a position of power (as a past mod), and frikkin’ Heisenberg whenever Chronos posted; I also mentioned that As You Like It was one of my favorite plays (he has a quote from AYLI in his sig), and suddenly turned into a male at one point

• Warned people for being insulting in the wrong forum and said I loved the word “prestidigitation” (one of Twickster’s favorite words)

• Also warned people, mentioned I’d hosted a similar party before, said I had my own home for such get-togethers (i.e. the Idlemafia board), lived in the SouthWest, and talked about Ben & Jerry’s, Strawberries and Cheesecake (Idle Thoughts’ user pic is a pint of B&J’s Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream)

• Alluded to C.S. Lewis’s famous “it’s more childish to be worried about being thought childish” quote after Malacandra posted, not to mention referencing being a chessmaster, suddenly using UK spellings/phrasing, playing the trumpet (though I’d prefer the cornet), winning the last Feud game, watching “The Good Life” because I had a crush on Barbara (Felicity Kendall), and preferred roleplaying games (he’s in the Rule of Three RPG now)

• Made a hidden “All About Eve” quote after Antinor1 (whose last quirk was having to reference Bette Davis films)

• Talked about Douglas Adams, a ridiculously long commute, and living in Illinois for Hoopy Frood

• Became a Capricorn, discussed a couple of real estate lawsuits and my Magic the Gathering collection (Ender24 is looking to buy 'em in the Marketplace forum) and referenced “I can has cheezburger” (a Spanish version is in his sig), as well as complaining about chocolate macaroons being so expensive (one of his pit threads was against the expensive Kosher for Passover foods)

• Complained about getting tacos without meat in 'em (just like Mad the Swine recently did)

• Suddenly mentioned I was wearing a “yellow jacket” after Notfrommensa posted (a reference to his favorite team), also saying I wasn’t a genius (his screenname) and referred to playing online poker every Thursday

• Talked about my broken pizza equipment and my dog’s tooth problems (both references to recent Intergalactic Gladiator posts

• Referenced the De’endee Mafia game that Mahaloth hosted (complained about people not addressing me in the correct color, i.e. green), and also loving Kubrick films and Minority Report by Spielberg

• Had trouble speaking Spanish after Inner Stickler posted (he says he sucks at Spanish in his profile)

• Mentioned having bought Dunkin’ Donuts straight from their headquarters (Canton MA, where etv78 lives, as well as bringing up the word “ultracrepidarian,” which s/he recently mentioned was a favorite

… and other things I don’t even remember. It cracks me up that you guys didn’t even recognize your own dang posts! And the awful thing was when fewer and fewer people were participating, the harder my job was becoming since I had fewer shticks to work with. For one person I was going on and on about some weird vocabulary words, all of which were words this person had recently learned.

I thought for sure my fellow guests would figure my quirk out before the hosts, especially since the hosts were barely posting – so I couldn’t reference their own personalities as often as I could the guests’.

So that’s why I was so frustrated when the hosts didn’t participate. They’d probably never be able to guess unless I was able to imitate them directly. Although then again, apparently none of the other guests recognized their own traits and posts, some of which I was directly paraphrasing. (I know I took one of Chronos’s posts, perhaps about the way we measure or perceive time, and basically just rewrote it a bit.)

The amount of work I had to do for this quirk was off the charts. Not only that, if I took too long to compose one of my posts and someone else sneaked in before me, I had to erase the whole thing and start again so I could reference the latest poster instead.

LOL! What an awesome quirk. I* did* actually twig on a couple of those things, but never made the connection that it could be something to do with your quirk. :smack: (especially the toothbrushing one, I was surprised someone else had that aversion and why were you posting about it??) And I actually almost linked back to my post in that that thread saying I did know the word tmesis.

Gah. Sorry! I feel both bad and stupid, now. You really did put a lot of work into these.

And the idea of a meta-quirk never even occurred to me. Here I was trying to figure out a common theme among your posts, never having it occur that there wasn’t actually “a” common theme. There were multiple common themes. You’re posts were so disjointed taken together that I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what type of person would have that many different things going on.

Of course, knowing now that it was pretty much every other poster in the game, it becomes a bit clearer.

Heh, thanks Hoopy. Well, I think I must’ve had the hardest quirk ever, at least to portray, and honestly I had to respond a lot because I wanted to respond to every guest/host at least once.

I really thought what would give me away was when I’d say something like, “In my four years on the board…” right after someone with a 2007 join date, or refer to a location that was in the previous poster’s Location line (but this was only easy to see if the poster was a Charter Member). And then there were the more “famous” posters, like Chronos, who is fairly well-known for his interests and so I thought mentioning LOTR and Heisenberg was a dead giveaway – ditto Malacandra and C.S. Lewis, and also referencing that he’s mentioned that he originally wanted the screen name Diogenes.

You were tough, though, Hoopy – you’re a bit more elusive, except for the Douglas Adams stuff and I think I may have mentioned software development, and a reference to your current “Rule of Three” character:

…Which sucks because recently a couple members of my family became unavailable to fulfill their duties. And as a result, I’ve had to take on a lot of extra responsibilities I’m not prepared for. Unfortunately I’ve led kind of a dissolute life and having to clean up my act all of a sudden is taking all my efforts.

eta: also, that “Diogenes” reference is really obscure - I’ve mentioned it a few times, but out of a five-figure post count… that’s almost scary. Hope I’ve not given too many clues about my internet bank account!
