The confidence intervals for the relative risks of hemorrhagic stroke and being “overweight”, as well as for hemorrhagic stroke and having obesity, both crossed the 1.0 mark (i.e. they were not even significant at the p = 0.05 level). OTOH, the study did show an increase in hemorrhagic stroke with increasing BMI (i.e. even within normal weight individuals).
These two findings are somewhat at odds with each other. However, when you take into account the many risk factors that are associated with obesity (hypertension, diabetes, sedentary, dyslipidemia, etc.), it seems quite plausible that it’s not the obesity per se that confers risk of hemorrhagic stroke (even it even exists), it’s an uncontrolled-for, or inadequately controlled-for, associated risk factor (s).
Well more to the point the guy gets put on a major blood thinner and two weeks later bleeds in his brain. Hmm…I wonder, what could *possibly * be the cause? Science may never solve this riddle.
Oh and **marymargaret ** I’m sorry about your dad. My take is shaped by a family member too - who was on Plavix (which is milder anticoagulant) and started getting hematomas and bleeding in the kidneys. And the hematomas weren’t just bruises - they were big hard lumps of blood the size of a racketball. I get all sick when I think what would have happened if he’d gotten one in his head.
Haven’t you been listening to Pat Robertson? God did it! Sheesh, do you need it screamed at you from a burning bush or something?
God also made the dirty dishes all smelly this morning, to punish you for putting them in the sink last night and forgetting to rinse them. God HATES that kind of thing. Will you never learn!*
*Footnote for Robertson fans… this post is meant as a joke only. It’s an example of sarcasm.
It doesn’t matter, from his theological point of view. Christian Zionists base their beliefs on Old Testament prophecies, which understandably don’t make any mention of Christians. The Twelve Tribes return to Israel and rebuild the Temple, and the Messiah shows up.
A Christian will naturally read “Jesus Christ” for “Messiah,” but it says that spot belongs to the Jews right there in black and white, and there’s not much you can do about it. So the Jews (or some of the Jews) become Christian when their Messiah shows up and it turns out to have been Jesus the whole time, even though most of them failed to recognize him on the first go-round.
You can’t mess with the prophecies by having people who aren’t Jewish hanging about.
That’s not support, though. It’s more like he finds Israel useful. You don’t have to like Jews for that - especially if you only like them because you think they’ll eventually renounce Judaism.
Yes.
And didn’t Yasser Arafat get a Nobel peace prize?
Ariël Sharon did do a lot for peace with the Palestinians. At the cost of his own people. [the settlers]
I’m afraid the ‘Palestinians’ will find out the hard way just how much Sharon did.
Good GOOOOD! I was having trouble sleeping (~ 3:39 am) and I turned on the silly TV tube, flipping channels… and low and behold, FOX NEWS had invited a biblical scholar and a 700 club rep to duke it out (it might have been O’Reilly Factor with no O’Reilly). The “moderating” FOX NEWS anchor (just like the ALL SPIN ZONE usually works) freaked when the scholar suggested that Pat Robertson had made a fanatical application of the old testament.
The “moderator” proceeded to turn down the guy’s mike, shuffle his off etc., as if he had acted in a way that FOX NEWS had not planned. After a few choice words from the 700 club rep, the scholar continued to point out that Robertson’s wording made him a fanatic, and that literal biblical application by public figures to specifically (politically) motivated targets should recieve criticism, and the STUPID FUCKING ASSHOLE FOX NEWS asshole began to side with the 700 club guest and was angry that the scholar used “literal” “bible” and “wrong” in the same sentence.
I have always seen FOX NEWS as an irritation, but this is unbelievable! - I expect there will be more defending Robertson from that useless brain-felching organization… ASS-FUCKING-SHIT-HOLES!
I have only pity for Pat Robertson and his ilk, The poor guy is just trying to escape reality. His talk is surely not Christian. Jesus said to love your enemies, Robertson wants to kill them or hope God does. He is a perfect example of the Pharisees of Jesus time.
It can’t be both? I’m no fan of Robertson, but I don’t think every though in the man’s head is so evil/insane that it must preclude even the possibility that he truly believes it’ll also be good for the Jewish people to become Christians.
But that’s not real support for Israel, it’s using Israel as a tool for his own religious fantasies. It’s also profoundly bigoted. Just because a belief is sincere doesn’t mean it’s not insulting.
Judaism is as much a religious fanstasy as Christianity, to me. I don’t see how wanting them to believe his particular fantasy is bigoted, or any more bigoted than anybody else who thinks their religion is one true religion and hopes everybody else believes the “truth” someday.
I think it’d be the best if everybody in the world becomes athiest like me, does that make me bigoted? More or less than Pat? Am I insulting anybody, too?
