I actually watched the 700 club for the first time. It was rather frightening.
He had some woman sobbing about how she forsaw in 2003 dark forces attacking America. Not only the usual suspects (Iraq aka. “Babylon”, Iran, and Yemen) but other monstrosities such as Russia (you know how much they love the Muslim fundamentalists!), " Muslim Soviet Georgia" (which I believe is neither Muslim nor Soviet) and Uzbekistan (which actually has a very pro-America population in a recent poll in the Global Attitudes Project).
Anyway, the main point of the show was beating the audience over the head that America is really going to get it this year because of its “debauchery” (if liberal laws on contraception and homosexuality piss off God, why aren’t Denmark and Sweden and other countries which make America look downright Victorian ever get whacked?) .
Great Pat, thank you for providing further justification to Al-Qaeda. They aren’t just taking opportunistic hits, they are meting out divine retribution.
The second part of the program offered the embattled viewer a chance to fight back by donating to the 700 Club and purchasing a wide variety of Mr. Robertsons “products”. As I see it, this is a slightly less overt way of saying “send me your money or the world will go to hell”. I remember some years ago Oral Roberts pulling a stunt where if he didn’t get a certain number of donations in due time, God would take him (and his university) out of Earthly existence.
There really should be a law against this sort of thing. As I see it Pat Robertson is a money grubbing toad. He doesn’t even mask it, he has to mention the damn stock indexes every 30 seconds on his show. Hasn’t he read 1 Timothy 6:10?
Anyway, I am thinking there just has to be something illegal about his whole ‘club’. He must be a millionaire many times over as well. Or maybe I just resent seeing things that actually force me to yell back at the TV.
Anyway, I wish someone in power would have the cojones to give this turn a public smacking.
I mean’t to say “this turd”, now that I think of it, the comparison is rather unfair - as the majority of the world’s fecal matter is - apart from smelling bad - rather honest and law abiding.
So long as there are that many sheeple in the world who are just begging to get trimmed, it’s going to be really darned hard to keep people like Robertson from picking up the shears and heading out to the pasture.
There’s a reason they call congregations ‘flocks.’
That’s a nice soul you go there, buddy. Yessir, a real nice soul.
Be an awful shame if something were to…happen to it. Things happen, you know. It might get lit on fire, if a person doesn’t have protection. Terrible thing, a nice soul like that burning down, real terrible.
Now don’t look so worried there, mac, we’re just talking here, that’s all. Of course, even if we weren’t just talking, well, we’re all reasonable here. We can come to some sort of arrangement, can’t we mac? I thought so.
Heh, AFAICK I thought god flipped Pat the bird when in 1998 he said that Orlando was going to get a hurricane from god because of the gay pride parades there. The year before, in Nicaragua, the rightist government passed new laws to criminalize homosexual behavior. Guess who got destruction from above in 1998?
[sub]Hint: It looks like god is changing his old fashion opinions regarding gay rights. If you follow Pat’s logic. [/sub]
Of course some believers conveniently forget the acts of god that don’t fit their views.
11:13 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
11:14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.
11:15 And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.
11:16 Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;
11:17 And then the LORD’S wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you.
This info is, of course, general, but it might be the basis upon which Robertson extrapolates his weather predictions.
That’s the wonderful thing about the Bible: Saints and Sinners alike can take snippets of scripture out of context to support or refute darn near any point they choose.
Matthew 27:5 And he…went and hanged himself.
II Samuel 11:4 And David sent messengers, and took her: and she came in unto him, and he lay with her
