Patrick Stewart dead at 86

As I mentioned earlier, way quite a few years ago there was a project to do “Transmetropolitan” as a series, and Patrick Stewart was floated as the person to play Spider Jerusalem… and the thing is that he loved that comic and the character; he was a fan…!

The comic is from 25-30 years ago, and this project was from about 20-something years ago. Patrick Stewart was ~65 years old then, and I sincerely believe that he was in good enough shape to play the character, and that he would have knocked it out of the park.

Me three. Friends of ours went the first year and highly recommended it. Fortunately he did a second year, and that’s when we went. Definitely worth it.

I first saw him on TNG, which started when I was in high school. Met my husband in college, and we’d watch the episodes together when we were dating and after we were married.

Some years ago we watched Dune (1984) and were surprised to notice Patrick Stewart in it.

Reading this thread, there seems to be a lot of his work that I haven’t seen.

I actually met him once. In the summer of '92 I spent a week with a good friend of my dad’s, who happened to be running Paramount Studios at the time. One day he dropped me off on the TNG set for a couple of hours, and while I wasn’t that much of a Trekkie at the time (that came later, after I married one), it was still a fun experience. Anyway, Stewart was there too, and we chatted for a bit. I don’t remember about what we talked about, but there he was, the Captain, a short smiling bald man in a tracksuit, talking warmly with a random 18-year-old with no real reason to be there. It made an impression.

(Also, Marina Sirtis is a lot hotter in real life. Oh my).

This is sad, especially losing two fine Trek actors in the same week . . .

Who is still with us from TOS? Shatner, Takei, . . . ‘Yeoman Rand’?

Godspeed, Sir Stewart.

He also does excellent voice work in one of my favorite films, Miyazaki’s Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

No, unfortunately Grace Lee Whitney died way back in 2015 at age 85.

Oh man, thank you for correcting me. I recall reading that she’d been harassed & assaulted on set, but key stars rallied to keep her safe. Totally forgot she’d passed away. . .

Is that it? Just Shatner & Takei then?

Of the main cast, yes, including those who played named crew members but weren’t in every episode (like Majel Barrett, Grace Lee Whitney, and John Winston (Lt. Kyle)).

There are still some other surviving actors who appeared in a number of episodes:

  • Actors who appeared in multiple significant guest roles, such as Barbara Babcock (six episodes) and Diana Muldaur (two episodes).
  • Actors who regularly appeared in various small roles, often unnamed, such as Jay D. Jones (ten episodes) and David L. Ross (nine episodes).

Thanks for sharing that.

It’s impossible to imagine most ‘name’ stars telling such a story on themselves–being that willing to expose an incident in which they didn’t shine (just the opposite).

Stewart apparently had amazingly high emotional-intelligence.

It does seem, to me, that working on TNG, with that group of actors, helped him unlock the funny, whimsical side of his personality which was seen in the decades that followed.
