:smack: Dammit! I know that! I swear, the word ‘Wisconsin’ is stored in the very most short-circuited part of my brain. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve made this mistake.
Well good, somebody had to agree with somebody else at least once in this thread. That said, have you seen Paula taking a defiant pose on the cover of People? In the Independence Day issue no less. I’d say she’s attention-seeking. And now everyone who steps into a grocery store gets to have the n-word on their mind. Gee, thanks, Paula
Looks to me like the latest media storm. Shoulda took cover, stocked up on water and snacks in a safe place without a tv or internet connection for a couple of days…
Wow, aa, grateful for a coward’s support who can’t articulate a valid reason we should have sympathy for an uppity, rich bigot on a power trip who can disappear from the media and retire mega-wealthy without ever lifting a finger. That poor, misunderstood white victim of her environment. Maybe you should set up a charity fund for poor white southern bigots who don’t know they aren’t superior to black folk.
No, people can be judge by anything. Do you believe people should be judged by statements taken out of context? Do you believe that in such a situation that someone that listens to the media’s reports are a better judge that a person in the court room (if there is a lawsuit) and get all sides of the information?
The people in the court room are getting the whole story, not media sound bites. I think the way they rule will hold more merit than people that are just going on sensational media headlines and too busy to read the transcript, or even a news article that presented other, less scandalous or racist parts of the lawsuit.
I try not to judge people in Paula’s situation lest I be judged in that situation. Life has shown me too many surprises.
That’s nice that you have compassion for people you don’t know (or I assume you don’t know). I’m speaking specifically about family that you likely care very much for regardless of their faults. Think of a family member that suffers from addiction and have done horrible things to support it. Is it not sad when they kill themselves because of some depression or feeling of overwhelming sadness?
And thank you for the spelling tips. I invite you to proof read all my other posts and let me know what errors I have made so maybe someone will on this thread will actually attention to what I have posted. Maybe then you can come back with grammatical errors and something of substance to discuss.
You keep harping on context as if context somehow changes what Deen has said. Unless your argument is that she was actually talking about someone else, how are her words taken out of context?
And, seriously, do you believe lawsuits are about getting all sides of the information when it comes to judging Paula Deen as a racist? Because she isn’t being sued for being a racist. She’s being judged by public opinion for being a racist. Whatever happens in court doesn’t actually address her racism, only whether the plaintiff can prove that she illegally discriminated.
Since you keep bringing up her history as if it were relevant and you keep claiming that the lawsuit is what’s relevant, do you think that her age and the place of her birth is relevant to the lawsuit?
Maybe. But decent people in privileged positions of power over subordinates know better than to ridicule them or make them feel like shit due to the accident of their parentage. It’d be nice if you’d learn a lesson from this and improve your own attitude and prejudices. But you’re too damn white, stubborn, and entitled, huh?
I thought it was tongue in cheek. And, yes, I did chuckle a bit.
By the way, I’m a tad too lazy to go through the thread and check any and all links to see if this has been addressed: who really believes Deen actually had the experience she related about being held up? I’ve never heard of it before and I find it rather too convenient for her to trot it out now.

I haven’t but I’ll look out for it. I’m sure in the end she’ll come out fine and just as rich once all this is over. It’s silly that this is making her more famous though. Have you ever had her pumpkin cake role? It was a featured Thanksgiving dessert a few years back. Sweet Jesus…
Is this a comment toward me or my comment towards Ombre?? Who cares what she is or who she is? Rich or no, I just believe that you should have your case presented fairly to the public so they will judge you fairly. I’m not trying to articulate why you should have sympathy or even that you should. I’m just trying to communicate that the media reports are horribly skewed and suggest that maybe, we should hold our judgment until we know more about the case either by 1) our own research of the court transcripts, or 2) the court’s own decision.
A)That’s no fun and B)She’s already admitted to using racial slurs which ipso facto makes you a racist and C)It’s about more than a slur. It’s about a whole pattern of behavior and attitude that bespeaks a racist mindset at worst and uncaring at best.
I harp about context because from my experience, most people don’t realize that she said the N-word a long time ago and (the most cited time) recounting a heated conversation concerning a violent act. Many people don’t think it really matter if they are talking about things said 30 years ago. I’m sorry, but I can’t really find anyone that is surprised (or really cares) that an older southern woman use to say the N-word a few decades ago. If you are, you are a silly naive person.
I happen to believe that lawsuits are about getting all sides of the story and determining if and what damages have been done. I believe the Paula Deen lawsuit is about rather or not she knew and allowed places she funded to harbor a discriminating working environment and that they are attempting to use 30 year old comments as an attempt to make their story more plausible. I believe that the public has not been given a fair report of the actual situation and that they aren’t able to judge fairly because of it. The court won’t ever address her racism because that isn’t the question of the court. I am interested to see how the court will rule on the work environment of her restaurants however.
I believer her age and the place of her birth are relevant when it comes to her past racial comments, current racial views and her ignorance of how some of her behavior is in fact racist. I believe that some of her past racist actions are being used to bolster the argument that Paula and her brother operate a discriminatory establishment. In that indirect way, yes, the place of her birth and age of Paula is relevant to the lawsuit.
Not necessarily, which is why lawsuits such as this exist. Again, you automatically assume she ridicule’s subordinates. Currently, she is accused of being complacent when other’s did it, not of actually doing it.
White, stubborn and entitled huh?? Are you this cute, presumptive and naive in real life too? When are you going to ask questions or say stuff that contributes?
I’m not sure what you are responding too but I assume it’s something I have said so…
A) What’s fun?
B) I don’t believe that the use of racial slurs makes you racist but on the other hand I believe most people are racist to some small extent so I ask, does being racist mean that you will definitely run a business that is racist? You can be as racist as you want in 'Merica as long as it doesn’t effect anyone else.
C) You are right. It IS more than a slur. It’s about the fact that the public isn’t getting the entire picture of actual behavior but they are still silly enough to judge just on that.
Here in 'Merica the majority often rules. If most of us have evolved to know better than to throw around racial slurs at subordinates and we find her behavior to be distasteful and we decide to vote with our money to remove her backward, racist ass from the networks and commercial endorsements, we do so. Don’t really care what you think, as you are in the minority. Huh. Irony. What’s that taste like?
Wait. Your claim now is that people don’t know that she called someone a nigger 30 years ago and that if they knew they wouldn’t care?
But in this thread, people clearly know. Many people have addressed it. They profess to care.
So you can’t really say that you can’t find anyone who cares. They’re right here.
I don’t think anyone is surprised, but since that’s because many of us think a whole shitload of people are racists, I don’t see how that helps your cause of demonstrating that Deen isn’t necessarily racist.
She wouldn’t have seen this as a ridicule. She would have though, “this is someone that works with me closely and I trust very much” if her comments are to be believed.
I have heard and been party too many such comments among friends. Such as asking an Asian person if they can see something, joking with my red-headed boss about her temper or imitating a co-worker’s thick accent. It’s funny sure. Will I do it on TV in public, no.
