Peace Corps workers killed in the line of duty: How often does it happen?

I’ve been mulling over joining the Peace Corps for several years. However, I’ve seen several pieces of documentary footage that is scaring me off. Like for example, years ago Albania had a huge financial crash and they wanted to tear every foreigner limb from limb. Some kind people hid a Peace Corps worker there until the hysteria died down.

Just wondering, how safe a job is this?

Looks like somewhere around 250 people have died while in the Peace Corps, but I didn’t count exactly. The majority died in accidents. Only 20 of those killed were homicide victims (excluding cases where manner of death is uncertain). That’s doesn’t seem outrageously high when you consider that 168,000 different people have served, typically for two years at a stretch. That’s implies a homicide rate of about 6 per 100,000 people per year, which is comparable to the US national average of around 5.5.

Thanks, bib.

This creepy list of homicides is not exactly persuading me.
