Peanut Butter and Pickle Sandwich? How About Mayo?

The New York *Times *has an article on 'em. I’ve never tried them, nor have I ever thought of trying them. I’m watching my weight, so I decided just now to try a hunk o’ pickle with a dollop of peanut butter.

And it tasted…not bad. Not great, but pretty good. I’ll bet on bread it would be even better. The author of the article recommends bread and butter pickles. The sweetness combined with the saltiness probably is better than a kosher dill, which is what I used.

I’ve also heard that peanut butter and mayonnaise is delicious, although I’ve never had the guts to try it. I don’t know if one is supposed to mix the two spreads together or what the ratios are, but I have to admit that a part of me is really, really curious.

So then maybe by extension a peanut butter, pickle, and mayo sandwich would be the king of sandwiches!

My hub eats peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. Not being a pickle lover, I maintain it is the spawn of satan. He’s never expressed an interest in mayo, though.

My dad would eat PB&P sandwiches to try to gross me out when I was young. Somewhere along the line I picked up the habit of an occasional peanut butter and Miracle Whip sandwich. I believe that MW is sweeter than regular mayo, so it’s kindasorta closer to jelly in that respect. I enjoy the PB&MW, but my kids think that it’s gross, so I revel in their discomfort just like dear old Dad did.

No mayo, but yes! My best friend introduced me to a pickle dog - dill spear on a hot dog roll, covered in chunky PB, about 15 years ago, and I love 'em!

I tried a bite from a friend’s PB&mayo once. It was gross.

My dad ate peanut butter and sweet pickle sandwiches. No mayo.

Peanut butter and mayo is delish, but you can’t really avoid the fact you’re eating a sandwich full of nothing but fatty goo. I usually go heavy on the peanut butter with just enough mayo to take the edge off.

I love it!

I was introduced to them about a decade ago by a friend’s mom. I couldn’t believe she was eating what she was eating, and seriously thought that perhaps she was losing her mind just a little bit more than normal.

But I’ll try any food once, so I tried it, pretty much on a dare with myself.

And I love it! It’s gotta be white bread, and you gotta smash it. Having dill pickle sandwich slices already handy in the jar helps.

I really wish I could read the NYTimes article, but it’s pay-per-view, so to speak. Anyone got a summary?

Edit: Oooh, found a short sorta-summary:

** Can the “Peanut Butter & Pickle” Sandwich Make it to the Mainstream? **

From the NYT in an article titled, "Peanut Butter Takes On an Unlikely Best Friend":

I sometimes cut a jalapeño in half lengthwise, then de-vein and de-seed most of it and spread peanut butter on each half. The sweet/salty taste of the PB with the crunchy spiciness of the raw pepper is delicious. Also excellent spread with cream cheese wrapped in bacon and baked until done. OK, that’s it! I’m making some this weekend.

PB & Mustard…toasted!

QFT! Though you can (feebly) justify it a bit since peanut butter has protein. The mayo’s slight tartness is a fabulous contrast.

mayo is just sick.

pickles needed to be flicked dry to not sog the bread or make it slippery.

Peanut butter & mayonnaise (that’s what we called it but it was actually Miracle Whip—needs that tangy zip!) sandwiches were a staple growing up at our house. Legend has it that my dad lived on them when he was in college. I still have one now and then.

It’s been a few years since I’ve had a PB&P. But agreed – either bread and butter pickles or sweet gherkins. Because dill pickles would just be gross.

I go with creamy peanut butter and bread and butter pickes. I did not know this was a whole “thing”. I just assumed I was odd.

Peanut butter (Crunchy) and Pickles (Gherkin).

Yum.

My mother grew up with peanut butter and pickle sandwhiches, and thus, so did I.

The proper pickles are sweet dills–buy store bought whole dill pickles, drain them, slice them, add a bit of sugar, let it dissolve and eat.

My father introduced me to peanut butter and mayo sandwiches when I was but a small child. I love them, especially if the there is a direct 1:1 ratio of PB to M on soft white bread. Even considering the protein in the PB, there’s actually no defensible food value in the entire sandwich, but who cares?

I have never been able to get any of my friends or other family members to try them. More for me!

Peanut butter and pickle is good. I finally tried the peanut butter and mayo thing, and I’m not exactly sure what the mayo is supposed to add. It’s not disgusting or anything; it’s just meh. Pickle at least gives you a nice sour or sweet & sour counterpoint to the fat and richness of peanut butter. Mayo is just adding more fat with a hint of sour. I really don’t get the appeal.

Grilled cheese and pickle, good. Peanut butter and pickkle, ugh, no. I saw that article today. What are people thinking?
