I’ve asked this before and nobody had a response. What, specifically, was said that you find offensive? Please quote the statement.
ETA: in my opinion, I wouldn’t say the statement was chastising or scolding. I’d say it was more of a plea, if I were forced to characterize it.
I have yet to heard Trump apologize to one person he has insulted , it would be great if Trump practice what he preach ! And Pence said he wasn’t offended by what was said to him so he wasn’t harangued by anyone ! Trump is so damn double standard that is not funny !
Irrelevant. My only point is that it was rude, inappropriate, and unprofessional for the cast to do it. Doesn’t matter who the target was, doesn’t matter whether the target was offended, doesn’t matter what the message was. I’d take the same stance if it was Hillary Clinton and the statement was “Please don’t take my guns, and thanks for coming”. People pay to see the show. Not to be lectured on politics by the actors.
My issue with this is that it could escalate and might invite more performers to go off on politics. Which then brings reprisals from the audience.
Frankly I think it would be best if politicians would be brought in a back door into a dark area so they wouldnt be noticed. Which with all the things the secret service has to do like check every person for weapons, is out of the question.
And I disagree with your point. That’s the beauty of living in America.
Pence was there with family members. I’m sure his preference was to mix with the crowd and get the full experience rather than hide in the dark like someone in fear of his safety. And I’m not aware of any reprisals from the audience, whether they agreed with the cast’s statement or not.
As regular Joe Nobody, if there’s one thing I hate about a show or concert it’s to be lectured about politics. From either side. I’m not calling for an apology, but this was lacking some level of class and I’d have been annoyed if I was in the audience. I think it was somewhat disrespectful not only to Pence, but to the entire audience.
But there was no lecture and no disrespect shown to anybody. And I read the statement and it sounded classy to me.
Please highlight the part of the speech that you think was disrespectful. You did actually read what was said, yes?
There was no disrespect, there was no lack of class.
There was an immensely powerful man appearing in public and people who make their living making statements in public made a personal appeal to him face to face.
This is exactly what democracy and a free society is about. This is what we should expect and encourage and cherish.
No one on stage called anyone names or encouraged violence or disrespect (unlike, say, what happens at a Trump rally or Ted Nugent concert).
As for what is the job of a theater performer, that’s up to them to decide, but theater has a long history of being political and of speaking directly to the people in the audience.
This is what it means to live in a free society and take responsibility for your freedoms. It means speaking to power when faced with it.
And this is what it means to hold power in a free society—it means to be willing to be confronted by the public without deference.
The part where he called out Pence by name. And the part where he interjected politics into a curtain speech. You just don’t do that to your audience.
Yeah! It’s a total breach of actor-patron confidentiality, or something.
You do realize the actor didn’t decide to make his speech on his own, don’t you? It was drafted by the creator and the producer of Hamilton with input from the cast members. It wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment action of a single person. And I’d say it’s the right of the producers to do exactly that, especially in a political play.
This is the biggest crock of shit, ever.
I’m not even political, yet even I could tell ya he went just so this very thing could happen, or something like it. He wanted to cause a stir. He was hoping something would happen. And he got it.
I say bravo to the cast of Hamilton.
Nothing offensive, nothing rude. I’ve read the statement and watched the vid and there was nothing disrespectful about it. Heck it was not even particularly confrontational.
But I welcome the Conservative Offenderati to the national public discourse. Was getting tired of the liberals always being the ones complaining someone somewhere said something they did not like.
Gee, a cast that includes sexual minorities are a little concerned when a man who actively works against sexual minorities gets a massive amount of power.
And people are still defending Pence? I guess that says a lot, don’t it?
If he wanted to cause a stir, why did he pause just past the exit to listen to it? Why didn’t he remain in view of the stage. Why didn’t he denounce the comment right there? Why did he say later that he wasn’t offended? Why didn’t he demand an apology? And why was it Trump stirring up the shit?
Sorry if it seems like I’m Just Asking Questions[sup]TM[/sup]. It’s a tough job trying to be the voice of reason and it’s time for dinner.
But, I do agree with your “Bravo.” ![]()
Because you never put the marks over.
I knew someone who went to see Penn and Teller’s magic show in Vegas and they spent half the time talking politics.
