I am not “on disability”, I am disabled. You understand the difference? Also, you understand that there are many sorts of disability payments? From private insurance to federal government. “On disability” is a term generally used for those who are temporarily unable to work, such as (ironically) pregnant women and those who have just given birth.
Apparently the problem here is that there are many people with very little clue about disability but are happy to show me their ignorance in an attempt to deflect the attention on the subject at hand.
Nope. I looked it up - SSI "Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes):
It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income; and
It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter."
Other than the disabled part, I don’t qualify for that at all, nor do I need it.
curlcoat, you just said a few posts up that your disability has run out. That means you were on disability. So don’t try to pretend like you didn’t say it, please…I do, in fact, understand basic English.
Ah. I wasn’t aware that you considered Social Security a “government run program for the disabled”. Guess I’m not allowed to retire early.
Snort. The public school system is certainly not the only place sucking money out of me to benefit children and parents. And the money doesn’t go to the children, it goes to the adults, who chose to have kids.
My state disability payments ran out. Quite a while ago. However, that doesn’t mean I am “on disability” since that was simply a temporary payment for those who can’t work but are eligible for unemployment. If I were “on disability”, there would be efforts made to get me back into the workforce, which there aren’t.
Well, sure it is. You are going to collect MORE from SS than most people, and they are going to have to subsidize that.
As I said, whatever you need to tell yourself to justify your hypocrisy. Every single one of us pays taxes that goes to support others’ lifestyle choices.
No, I said I was waiting on the federal government - SSDI does not “kick in”, not in the slightest. Once you give them money, even money they intend to give back, they tend to want to keep it.
Again, what in god’s name does this matter? You are not turning down any government assistance that you are entitled to. All this nitpicking doesn’t change that a whit.
Of course you are…most people don’t become disabled and retire early.
Me? I have no idea, since we live in different states. You might have visited a National Park I’ll never get to…who the hell knows? You have mentioned that you train your dogs in the park…everyone has to pay for that, even people who don’t go to the parks. Training dogs is YOUR lifestyle choice. People who don’t drive still pay for the roads. Driving to Sacramento was YOUR lifestyle choice.
Etc. etc. etc.
Don’t you get it? We all pay for things we personally have no use for. That’s the way government works.
You don’t know anything about the quality of my work, do you? You’re just insulting me with whatever pathetic ammunition you can scrape up. Can’t stick to the topic, had to resort to irrelevant, bitchy ad homimen, showing how bankrupt your argument in this thread is. You get sooo upset when people use your personal details against you, but you’re free to do it to me. How could you possibly know what kind of teacher I am? You couldn’t do my job, so maybe stick to what you know: dogs and bitching, none of which pays very well.
Sure you do. And guess what? Most of us love kids and think people like you are sickening, so the feeling is not mutual.
OK, I’m not a teacher, and you’re not disabled. We’re both liars. At least I’m not a liar who’s a bigot and full of hate. Get a job. I mean that in the nicest way possible.
And what makes you think children are any different from you? They don’t earn a paycheck right now, but they contribute to society each and every day. You may not think they’re contributions are worth much, but you’d be wrong, just as most of your opinions on the subject of children are wrong.
No, I’m not a bigot. I just don’t like YOU. Doesn’t feel so great to have aspects of your life you can’t control held against you and described in denigrating ways, eh? Consider that the next time you slag off on someone else who can’t help being what they are. It might make you less of a hostile hypocrite.
I consider this type of hostility toward children and the concept of them being part of society to be a form of disability in itself. There’s something wrong with someone who feels this way about fellow citizens. Something very, very wrong.
It’s what economists refer to as “utility.” People enjoy things; movies, sports, reading, and such. They enjoy children, so children add utility. My kid adds significant utility not only to mine and my wife’s lives, but others as well.
So they add utility to your family’s life, and others. Can’t argue with that. But that doesn’t add up to utility to society in general, which is what kalhoun claimed.
Presuming my friends and family are a part of society and do not live as an isolated hillbilly family deep in the woods, then obviously they do. Society is comprised of individuals; providing utility to some of them constitutes providing utility to “society.”
