People who seem to be related to each other, but aren't

I would have sworn that Karl Urban (Eomer in the LOTR trilogy) and Keith Urban were
brothers, but turns out, after some research they’re not, as one’s a Kiwi and the
other an Aussie (NZ born tho).

Who else gave you the impression of a definite relatedness, but upon further exam-
ination turned out not to be?

Adam Baldwin is NOT a “Baldwin brother.”

Hmm, I thought Keith and Karl were related too. You learn something new every day.

For a long time I thought Larry Bird and Billie Bird must be related (son and mother?), until the advent of the iInternet when I could easily look it up. How disappointing.

Until the latter died, I thought sure that Jean Stapleton and the Maureen Stapleton were sisters, even convincing myself that I could detect a family resemblance. But no, they were no relation.

I used to think Catherine Hepburn was Audrey Hepburn’s aunt. They were extremely distantly related cousins.

I used to think physicist William Thomson (Lord Kelvin) was the father of physicist J. J. Thomson, but they’re not related. J.J. was, however, the father of another famous physicist, George Paget Thomson.

For twenty years, I thought Helen Slater and Christian Slater were sister and brother (in real life, not just in that crappy movie).

Jack Black and Michael Ian Black. No relation, but damn, there could be.

I’m more misled by appearances than names.

I was astonished to discover that Robert Patrick (T-1000 in Terminator 2) was not related to Martin Sheen/Emilio Estevez/Charlie Sheen - he not only looks like a relation, he kind of sounds like one, too. Ditto John Goodman and George Wendt. To me, they look and sound very much alike. After seeing A River Runs Through It, if someone had told me Robert Redford and Brad Pitt were somehow related, I would have bought it lock, stock and barrel.

Aw, I liked The Legend of Billie Jean. It may or may not be a crappy movie, but I liked it. It used to play on cable all the time and I’d watch it every single time.

I thought Helen Slater and Christian Slater were related too.

As far as appearances, the Helen Hunt of old (as opposed to the freakishly skinny Helen Hunt of the past several years…my god, did anyone else see her skeleton play Martin Sheen’s wife in Bobby?) could, for a while there, have been related to Leelee Sobieski.

I liked The Legend of Billie Jean, too. Helen Slater (who I also thought was related to Christian) made me want to lick my tv screen in that movie.

Yowza!

Plus, it had Lisa Simpson in it! (Well, actually, Yeardley Smith, but I’ve always liked her and thought she was cute.)

For me, Barbara Carrera and Tia Carrere. I always thought they were mother and daughter, because I never noticed the slight difference in the spelling of their names. Plus, they look alike: delicious.

I thought for years that Colin Firth and Peter Firth were brothers, but they’re not related.

OK, I’m completely surprised the Hepburns weren’t more closely related than that. I would have practically sworn they were close kin of some sort.

I, too, thought there was some close connection between Audrey and Katherine Hepburn, before I was disabused of the notion.
Another one, I thought, was that Weird Al Yankovic was related to “America’s Polka King” Frank Yankovic. It seemed to make sense – Al does all those Polka parodies of current songs. I could swear I’ve even read it in some places. But, if so, they were wrong. Al says there’s no familt connection.

I assumed that Polly Bergen was Candice Bergen’s mother!

I’ve run into a few peiople who think Danny Glover is the father of Savion Glover. He’s not.

Peter Fonda once went on the Tonight Show and told Johnny Carson that he was actually Marlon Brando’s son adopted by Henry Fonda. I believed him until it became obvious that he simply disliked his father.

Helen Hunt and Leelee Sobieski should be related.

Before I saw his name in print I thought Haley Joel Osment was actually Haley Joel Osmond and was an offspring of one of the huge Osmond clan.

Perfectly cast as brothers on Frasier, but not related: David Hyde Pierce and Kelsey Grammer. Their resemblance is uncanny!

Crispin Glover is probably not related to either.

For the longest I thought Giovanni Ribisi and Billie Joe Armstrong were brothers. Even after I found out both of their names, I still had them born of the same mother in my head.
